We were delighted to attend today’s New Statesman Future of Healthcare Conference hearing from several industry leaders who came together to discuss the future of the UK's health policy at a pivotal moment.    Great to hear insights from Lord James Bethell, Lord Nigel Crisp, Stephen Kinnock MP, George Freeman FRSA MP and Victoria Atkins MP.    The discussion exploring how can we make the NHS a key driver for the #lifesciences industrial strategy particularly resonated with our ambitions for Paddington Life Sciences. Our key takeaways include:   📊 Supporting the NHS data infrastructure is a priority. Improve access to enable date to be used to measure the cost of disease and the value of health. 💡 Clinical trials: Radically digitise and democratize the clinical trials infrastructure to support commercial clinical trials and boost patient access. 🔄 Key role of charities: We need stronger emphasis on the role of charities in connecting patients together with the innovation ecosystem   Thank you to New Statesman for organising such an impactful event.

🌟 Building an inclusive life sciences workforce in Paddington 🌟 We need to make sure our life sciences’ partners have the skilled workforce they need to innovate and grow, while at the same time benefitting our local communities by making sure that pathways to careers in #lifesciences are well understood and accessible. 📊 Our Skills Mapping report in collaboration with Bloomberg Associates, highlights the skills and talent needs required across the life sciences business landscape in Paddington. We make a number of recommendations on how to support our local population with access to high quality jobs in the life sciences sector, while meeting skill needs. Yesterday, I had the privilege of giving a keynote speech at the Paddington Life Sciences first annual symposium, just a year after the launch of this important collaboration of industry, academia and the NHS within our local Paddington community.    Life sciences is one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK, and at Vertex Pharmaceuticals we know that many of the challenges we face can only be tackled by organizations coming together with focus and ambition. We’re delighted to be a founding member of this new life sciences cluster, collaborating with our neighbours to advance health care and reduce inequalities through innovation.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of co-hosting our Paddington Life Sciences Symposium alongside Vertex Pharmaceuticals, bringing together key voices from the NHS, academia, and industry. It was fantastic to be joined by so many to celebrate the first year of Paddington Life Sciences. Paddington Life Sciences is a prime example of the #NHS working not only as a healthcare system for our patients today but also as a driver of economic growth for this generation and future generations. The event celebrated the phenomenal achievements of the past year while also looking ahead to the future. The collaborative energy in the room was truly inspiring. We heard from our industry partners, including those from both the pharma and real estate sectors. The future of #lifesciences is bright, and we’re excited to continue building momentum from this event. Thank you to everyone who attended and to all our partners for their contribution. We had an incredible experience visiting Vertex's Learning Lab in Milton Park, where students from local schools get a hands-on introduction to the world of STEM. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is one of the founding partners for Paddington Life Sciences.   The Learning Lab is a dedicated lab space for students from local Oxford and Didcot schools to meet Vertex employees and conduct hands-on, real-world experiments. They also offer a unique opportunity of paid summer internships to Year 12 students to explore the business of biotech, strengthen their STEM skills and knowledge, and cultivate a professional network. Suki Balendra PhD, our director of strategic partnerships, said: “We were so inspired by our visit to Vertex’s Oxford Learning Lab. Building a community of great scientists in the local area is a key aspiration of Paddington Life Sciences and it was great to learn from Vertex’s successful outreach programme.” Thank you to the Vertex team for hosting us.

Fantastic news that the Fleming Initiative has reached an an initial funding milestone of £100m in the global effort to combat antimicrobial resistance. Earlier this week at #UNGA79 , three new partners joining the Initiative were announced - LifeArc, Cepheid and Optum. Optum, who are also a founding partner of Paddington Life Sciences, will serve as the primary data and analytics partner for the Fleming Initiative. Their commitment to the Fleming Initiative is an important example of the collaborative efforts involving a range of sectors is key to tackle AMR.   The Fleming Initiative is a collaborative partnership between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College London to tackle antimicrobial resistance around the world. https://lnkd.in/ezECAmMw
