On a mission to save 100k lives and $1.5B healthcare costs

About us

Owlstone Medical is developing a breathalyzer for disease. With a goal of finding ways to improve non-invasive diagnostics for respiratory diseases, liver diseases, cancer, digestive health, and other conditions. Our mission is to save 100,000 lives and $1.5B in healthcare costs by advancing early detection and precision medicine. Breath Biopsy® aims to develop a new diagnostic modality making it possible to discover novel non-invasive biomarkers in breath using a platform with the potential to transition to point-of-care. The award-winning ReCIVA® Breath Sampler ensures the reliable collection of breath samples. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in breath are analyzed using state-of-the-art chemical analysis technologies. Our aim is to develop tools, potentially based on our proven microchip chemical sensor technology (FAIMS), to detect validated biomarkers of disease. The Breath Biopsy platform provides biomarker discovery and validation capabilities to support the development of applications in precision medicine for a wide range of other medical conditions. Highly sensitive and selective, our platform allows for early diagnosis when treatments are more effective and more lives can be saved. Owlstone Medical is involved in studies related to major and rapidly growing health concerns including lung cancer, asthma and liver disease. We are also participants in extensive partnerships focusing on multiple cancer types, pulmonary hypertension, mesothelioma, workplace exposures and much more. Our Breath Biopsy Products and Services are available to academic, clinical, and pharma research partners who want to develop breath-based diagnostics for their own applications. Our products and services are for research use only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures.

We are delighted to announce that we have secured $6.5 million of funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop breath-based diagnostics for infectious diseases. Breath contains many potentially informative compounds that can be used for infectious disease diagnosis and monitoring, and the collection of breath has many unique advantages. Exhaled breath can be collected completely non-invasively and can be developed into portable devices that are easy to use. Through this partnership, we aim to identify non-invasive breath biomarkers of key diseases that disproportionately affect the developing world. We will then use this knowledge to build low-cost devices that can be used to reduce the burden of illness in resource-constrained environments. We are so thankful for the opportunity and are excited to get going with this project and work towards our mission of saving 100,000 lives! https://ow.ly/f9a750RmYvz

🚨 Inflammation is involved in the pathology of many disease conditions. For example, inflammation can be seen in respiratory diseases such as asthma and can provide disease biomarkers. Exhaled breath offers a roster of potential biomarkers arising from pathways in the body that may be disrupted by inflammation in respiratory diseases. 🌬️ 📑 Our ‘Inflammation Hub’ provides a library of useful resources about the role of inflammation in many different diseases and highlights how breath analysis can be used to collect and analyze biomarkers of inflammation. 🌬️Imagine being able to determine your state of health from just a breath of air. Research is revealing the immense potential for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from exhaled breath to serve as valuable biomarkers of health in a wide range of disease areas. How do breath biopsies fare against current methods? There are many benefits of using biomarkers in breath compared to other biomarker sampling techniques: 1. The non-invasiveness of breath sampling is pain and risk free. It can therefore be easily scaled to large populations and used even in high-risk groups. 2. Exhaled breath is a continuously produced waste product, compared to sampling methods like blood and urine samples where only a small amount can be collected at infrequent intervals. 3. Breath biomarkers are normal products of metabolism, which could be altered when the earliest effects of disease onset are present. 4. Many VOCs in the breath arise from the blood, which can reflect the health of the entire body. 5. Breath biopsies do not have the same costs as tissue biopsies, which are highly invasive and could miss regions of pathology if patchy. 6. Non-medical professionals can perform breath sampling as only basic training is required. 7. Breath sampling minimises pain, lifestyle impact, and logistical challenges, potentially improving patient recruitment and retention for clinical trials. Considering this, it is exciting to see the future applications of breath biopsies in the near future. Read more about the benefits of breath biopsies in our blog: https://ow.ly/Et1h50SFr0o

🌟 Exciting Insights into Gut Health! 🌟 Discover how different diets impact SCFA (short-chain fatty acids) production, essential for gut health. High-fiber diets boost beneficial SCFAs, while high-fat, low-fiber diets can disrupt this balance. Ever wondered how fasting might alter gut microbiota and SCFA levels in your breath? Or how a high-fiber diet or complex carbohydrates affect SCFA production? How does it relate to diseases? 🔎 If you want to know more, check out this great article on SCFAs and disease from Owlstone Medical https://lnkd.in/eCWYyqFW

🌐 Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting millions of people worldwide. Breath contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs), many of which are produced in the respiratory tract due to processes such as lipid peroxidation, that could serve as new biomarkers for asthma. 🌬️ VOCs can also be produced by the immunological mechanisms that underpin asthma pathophysiology and could be used as biomarkers to stratify asthma patients. We performed a literature review to collate which VOCs in breath are associated with asthma and collated this with our internal VOC Atlas data. 📊 You can read about what compounds were identified in our case study: https://ow.ly/AfXr50ScRRp #asthma #breathanalysis
