The Importance of Inclusive Classrooms for Children with SEND In the evolving landscape of education, fostering inclusive classrooms that nurture a sense of belonging and self-esteem is more crucial than ever. We have spent this week at The Foundation for Education Development conference were this point was reaffirmed by speakers and delegates alike. This approach aligns seamlessly with the vision of Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, who emphasises the importance of “healthy, happy children coming to school ready to learn.” She believes that if we get this right, children will achieve time and again. For children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), the traditional curriculum and assessment processes often fall short. These children frequently experience a sense of failure because their unique ways of thinking and creativity are not adequately recognised or valued. This can lead to diminished self-esteem and a lack of motivation to engage in learning. The Role of Inclusive Classrooms Inclusive classrooms are designed to accommodate the diverse needs of all students, including those with SEND. By creating an environment where every child feels valued and supported, we can help them develop a strong sense of belonging. This, in turn, boosts their self-esteem and encourages them to participate actively in their education. Holistic Assessment Approaches At Opogo Education, we believe that to truly support children with SEND, it is essential to adopt holistic assessment approaches that consider not just academic progress, but also mental health, wellbeing, and physical health. Schools that prioritise these aspects in equal measure are better equipped to meet the needs of all students. This comprehensive approach ensures that children with SEND are not only learning but thriving in all areas of their lives. Bridging the Gap By focusing on inclusive practices and holistic assessments, we can bridge the gap between the current educational system and the needs of children with SEND. This approach aligns with Bridget Phillipson’s vision and ensures that every child has the opportunity to succeed. When children feel healthy, happy, and ready to learn, they are more likely to achieve their full potential. Inclusive classrooms and holistic assessments are not just beneficial for children with SEND; they are essential. By fostering a sense of belonging and self-esteem, and by assessing progress in a comprehensive manner, we can create an educational environment where all children can thrive. Call to Action We encourage all educators to utilise the free resources relating to SEND, mental health, and wellbeing available on the Opogo Education Learn Platform. You can access it here: www.opogo.com/community. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this matter too... Senior Primary Account Manager at Opogo | EdTec | Social Enterprise | Supporting. Education. Together.

This month marks my 5th year at Opogo Education. It has been 5 years of personal and professional development and an incredible journey learning and collaborating with likeminded people. I interviewed with Justyn Randall at Opogo Education in 2019 for a junior Account Management position. I remember it like it was yesterday, as I am constantly reminded that what I wore to the interview was awful (cropped skinny chinos and a shirt – looking like I was going to a brunch). THANKFULLY, Opogo saw past this and took me on! Soon after getting the job, COVID hit (which was worrying enough, but being a new starter, you think all kinds of things). However, with the full support of Justyn and Opogo this was just the beginning of my progression! I went from Junior Account Manager/Talent consultant to Account Manager and now working as Senior Account Manager for South and West London managing 40 Primary Schools. Each academic year I set myself 3 goals. This year’s goals are: - To buy my first home (nearly there) -Break company records (currently averaging on 400 days per week and would like to reach 500 days) -Staying active (I have been working out 5 times a week since September, so we are on TRACK – Hannah Jensen favourite word) I set myself these goals, so I stay focused and to have something to work towards (yes, even working out – the 90-minute lunch break helps)! At Opogo, we strive for change. We are a social enterprise after all! Not only are we working with schools to deliver custom staffing solutions, but we reinvest 50% of our profits into the Opogo Learn Platform providing free CPD/courses to all educators. I joined this company because it was different from others. We have an online platform (tech is the way forward), I work with a great bunch of people (Thursdays are fun and Paris and Lisbon were wild incentives) and there is clear progression (my first home is in arms reach). Thank you Justyn, Hannah and (through gritted teeth) Conor for the support. I look forward for the rest of journey! If you managed to get to the end of this post, then you will be pleased to know Opogo Education is expanding and we are looking for Account Managers to join our team! If you are interested or would like to hear more feel free to reach out for an informal chat or apply below. Note to applicants: do not wear cropped chinos or dress like you are going to a brunch to an interview https://lnkd.in/ennMX-qR

Our Director of Learn visited ACC Liverpool today for the Brilliant Festival. It was great to meet so many educators and innovators under one roof. It's also fantastic to see such events being in hosted in #Liverpool. Well done to hi-impact for arranging such an impressive day. Great to see representatives from our friends Everton Free School too.

Working to help improve the lives of educators as a Trustee, SIP and developing technology that can enhance leadership, teaching and school development

The Brilliant Festival - Lives up to the name I had the pleasure of spending a really interesting more at ACC Liverpool. The highlight was the panel led by Steven Baker OBE FCCT with Grace Marson Cameron Jones and one other brilliant speaker whose name I didn't catch but really wanted to! The essence of the Q&A session was that leaders in industry, universities, entrepreneurs and school/trust leaders, are demanding change to our curriculum education system. We need a more inclusive and skills rich curriculum which compliments the current drive for 'knowing more and remembering more'. As ever the work of Everton Free School is inspiring, genuinely, and this needs to be seen and heard across mainstream settings. The teachers in the room spoke about the constraints which are real and restrictive. There's a need for some commonality of approach but I feel we need to be more focussed on the needs of our students with dyslexia, autism, ADHD, SEMH and so on. This is not a task which should be overly complex but one which looks are revising our systems that rely on short term memory, high stakes testing and streamed learning which ultimate leads to lower self-esteem and self-efficacy amongst our children and young people. Great conference and one which I'd encourage more to look at.
