3 HEARTS, 9 BRAINS AND AN ARMY OF PEOPLE TO SAVE OUR OCEAN Last week Okhtapus celebrated ocean week and #worldoceanday with the rest of our #blueplanet. And while every day is ocean day for us, it’s also important to remember that each and every day the ocean is the life force of the planet. The ocean makes our planet liveable. The ocean drives the water cycle for all of us. The ocean contains 97% of the earth’s water. It is one ocean for a planet that is 71% water. We depend on the ocean for keeping our planetary system working - feeding and then receiving constantly from river and lake locations. It’s all connected. Additionally, the ocean and those contributing waterways that we speak of so often are intrinsically connected to the health and wealth of all our communities, to the social, cultural and economic fabric, especially in coastal communities. To our origins and sustenance as humans. That’s why our global model at Okhtapus not only looks at deep ocean health but extends to the blue of coastal and contributing waterways and their communities, as well as the terrestrial contexts that can either hurt or help (or both) the ocean and freshwater sources. This includes bodies of water like the inland seas of the #GreatLakes in North America or #LakeMalawi in Africa. We are deeply committed to providing new pathways for equity and justice, focused on the ocean and coastal regions, including cities and communities of all sizes, as well as island and mainland populations that continue to grow, but also face increasing climate threats. We terrestrial dwellers tend to not see the ocean for what it is, sometimes simply because it appears so vast and untouchable, or an “out of sight, out of mind” situation. At Okhtapus we have created a model based on “three hearts” - solution innovators, project enabler/owners and financiers, to all be working in concert - Sometimes that’s a city government, sometimes that’s a corporation, sometimes that’s a #bluetech, #blueeconomy or #naturebasedsolution innovator - all funded or financed through a spectrum of impact investment providers. If you want to reimagine the future of our ocean and/or iIf you represent one of those three hearts/nodes, we want to hear from you and we want you to join our army of ocean changemakers!

Introducing Okhtapus – on this day, #EarthDay, we are thrilled to announce our global replication platform, designed to empower ocean change-makers to rapidly connect, scale, finance and replicate blue solutions. Our vision is a world absent of harmful planetary threats to the ocean, its contributing waterways and the communities that depend on them. We are on a mission to build the first global replication platform dedicated to resilient and equitable ocean and coastal solutions, powered by the potential of people and the ocean to bring about a regenerative future. We invite you to join us on this urgent journey. We live on a blue planet, a watery planet – a planet (we call earth) that provides life and abundance to us through its unique makeup – 71% of the surface covered by water, 96.5% of our water in the ocean – but the “whole of water” for our planet and the water cycle exists in the air, in rivers, lakes, glaciers and icecaps, in soil and in ground water and aquifers. And in us and the animals around us. When we are born, we are made up of 70-75% water. Unfortunately, we have abused our relationship with the ocean and its contributing waterways, and combined with the growing shocks and stresses of natural and manmade pressures and changes (most of them from the terrestrial side), our blue systems are under threat. We are not investing enough, we are not moving fast enough, and we are not putting communities and equitable, holistic solution matchmaking at the forefront. From nature-based-solutions (NbS) to coastal blue tech and blue economy, Okhtapus plans to solve for the “middle ground” to bring solution providers and innovators together with project enablers and investment for increased speed, efficiency and replication. Okhtapus was founded by Mehrnaz Ghojeh and Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, WEDG in early 2024, with a growing team of advisors in #ocean, #blueeconomy, #coastalresilience and #regenerativedesign. Like the eponymous animal of our inspiration and its three hearts and multiple intelligent arms, Okhtapus will unite the three nodes of project enablers, solution innovators and financing institutions, pulling together the ocean and blue ecosystem. If any of this sounds like your way of noting Earth Day 2024, please reach out and let’s forge new pathways and partnerships for our blue planet! We look forward to working with our partners, advisors and broader Okhtapus community members to change the course for people and the planet, on this day and every day.
