We're launching a new research tool which will provide governments, skills bodies, and the energy industry with enough information to ensure the UK has the right people with the right skills in place at the times and locations where they are needed. The research was commissioned by OEUK as it was recognised that simplifying the skills landscape is a key element in the drive to make the UK a leading clean energy industrial power. The data framework is called the Energy Industry Skills Landscape, and was commissioned by OEUK from Dr Christine Currie, an independent workforce and skills consultant for the energy sector. It is supported by an interactive dashboard designed to help stakeholders visualise and navigate information about skills initiatives throughout the country. Katy Heidenreich, OEUK’s supply chain and people director 🗣️ “The transition to net zero will involve some of the biggest engineering projects this country has ever seen and it will involve significant challenges in terms of skill supply and demand over the next 10 to 15 years. There are currently more than 170 different organisations administering skills recognition and training, and this is one of the first projects to analyse and map them across the whole of the UK. Matching the skills of the workforce to new jobs in the energy transition will need co-operation between these organisations and newly created bodies such as Skills England, as well as the devolved governments, trade unions, industry, and academia. We must deliver high skilled jobs to achieve economic growth and we know that the vast majority of people working in the oil and gas industry have expertise that can be transferred to new jobs in low carbon alternatives. This research makes the case for an industrial strategy with a joined-up approach to promoting accessible skill and training opportunities at all levels. We look forward to sharing it.” Read the report ➡️https://ow.ly/CoUQ50TCkp2 Access the interactive dashboard ➡️ https://ow.ly/jcuP50TCkp1

Offshore wind energy a £12 billion a year UK investment opportunity 👇 Speaking at the 2024 Celtic Sea FLOW (Floating Offshore Wind) summit held at the Eden Project, Britain’s premier bio-sustainability showcase at St Austell in Cornwall, Offshore Energies UK director Katy Heidenreich outlined how OEUK members are building 13GW of the government’s production target of 55GW of wind energy by 2030, and the need to pull together investors and businesses with the capacity to make this ambitious energy production target a reality. Katy said 🗣️“There will be a lot more offshore wind capacity towards the end of the decade and into the next, some of this driven by licences in the Celtic Sea, which will offer a huge economic boost to the Southwest of England and Wales. We have an energy supply chain with over 50 years of expertise in delivering large scale oil and gas capital projects, and a workforce that will be vital to delivering our ambitious offshore wind programme across the whole of the UK. This upcoming wave of new energy investments is a strategic opportunity for the oil and gas supply chain to diversify its revenue streams, enhance its capabilities, and extend its reach into international markets. However, none of this is a given. All requires huge investment – by 2030, an average £12bn per year will be needed. Industry and government must come together to build a detailed investment plan to scale up UK supply chain and make it competitive while benefitting the regions. An industrial strategy across the energy sector is needed to deliver 2030 net zero power and 2050 net zero and provide sustainable growth for UK plc.” Read More ➡️https://ow.ly/RMRj50TAegY

Insightful presentations and questions at our panel event at #CPC24 in Birmingham this week.    We were joined by Andrew Bowie MP, Shadow Minister for Energy, Douglas Lumsden MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy, and Transport, and Charles Hendry, Former UK Minister for Energy.    A homegrown energy transition could deliver £200 billion of private investment over the next decade, spurring economic growth and fostering UK technology and innovation across the energy mix.    However, the transition is estimated to cost £1.4 trillion, the majority of which will come from private investment. Competition for capital is fierce. To avoid the flight of capital, our people, and our oil and gas supply chains to other countries which are transitioning their economies, companies must see the UK as an attractive country to invest in.   By choosing a homegrown energy transition, we can protect skills, secure investment, and maximise sustainability. Let’s unleash our potential, and power our future. 📸 Bright Blue

The Connected Competence scheme, supported and enabled by the ECITB is an industry driven initiative. It was developed in collaboration with some of the UK’s largest contracting companies, each committed to using standardised training and testing based on the ECITB’s technical tests. The scheme has grown significantly in the last 18 months with ten major contractors and 20 clients signing up to the programme. This milestone marks another step towards creating a workforce that is safer, technically competent, and transferable across the industry 👏
