As Black History Month 2024 comes to a close, at Ofcom we’re reflecting on a month of celebration, learning and storytelling focused on this year’s theme: Reclaiming Narratives. Our RACE Network has led the way - organising a number of initiatives that build on its wider work throughout the year. Among a series of events, they hosted a talk from Denize Ledeatte, Director of the National Windrush Museum, who shared her insights on Reclaiming Narratives and the importance of preserving Black British stories. And the annual Black History Month Quiz, brought colleagues together to celebrate Black culture and heritage. And while this activity and lots more by our RACE Network, has helped create space for important discussions and perspectives, it is vital that commitment to inclusion, equity, and representation happens all year round. #BlackHistoryMonth #DiversityAndInclusion #ReclaimingNarratives

About us
Ofcom is the UK's communications regulator. We make sure people get the best from their home phone and mobile services, as well as keeping an eye on TV, radio and on-demand content. We also ensure people don’t get scammed and are protected from bad practice. We also oversee the universal postal service, and the airwaves used by wireless devices. Right now, technology is changing how people work, interact and enjoy themselves. Much of our work is focused on making sure everybody has access to the communications technology they need and that competition can thrive.

This Global Media and Information Literacy Week, let's tackle mis/disinformation 🙅 It is vital to our role that we research and promote media literacy across the UK, improving the online skills, knowledge and understanding of adults and children. Already this year we have: ⭐Published our three-year media literacy strategy, statement and annual plan. ⭐Had four major online services pledge to adopt best practice principles on-platform. ⭐Produced a toolkit for implementing media literacy initiatives. ⭐Begun producing a set of webinars on what works in delivering media literacy activities. However, we know we can't achieve our mission alone, which is why we work with organisations like @ShoutOutUK. Check out their three easy steps on how to spot mis/disinformation here ⬇️
In honour of UNESCO's Global Media and Information Literacy Week, let's break down the terms disinformation and misinformation. 🤔 Unsure of what they mean? Check the post for more info!

Today we've published our Post Monitoring Report, setting out trends in the postal sector. It reveals: 📈 Amazon and DHL get the highest satisfaction rates for customer services 📉 Evri scores the lowest The report also looks at Royal Mail’s financial and efficiency performance as the universal service provider. The company continues to make a loss, and while it has made productivity improvements, these are behind expectations. Find out more 🔗https://lnkd.in/eKNDFPH5

📻 Hundreds of new local radio stations take to the digital airwaves. Our new report on the roll-out of small-scale DAB radio across the UK shows we've helped 589 radio services reach the airwaves through this innovative technology over the past three years. Small-scale DAB allows grass-roots community services, specialist music stations and services aimed at minority groups to reach audiences in their cars, at home and online. We are currently assessing applications for the next round of small-scale DAB licences and due to the success of the programme, we will be opening a further two rounds. 🎥 Check out this video to get a glimpse into life as a small-scale DAB radio station with Blue Sky Radio, a 24/7 local radio stations for Staffordshire and Cheshire.

We've written to Peter Kyle MP, Secretary of State for Department for Science, Innovation and Technology with our evaluation of how illegal content spread online following the horrific attack in Southport, and the actions tech firms took in that period. 👇 From December, the spotlight turns to sites and apps as they'll need to act to help deliver a safer life online, as the Online Safety Act starts coming into force. We will expect them to do so swiftly, and we're prepared to take enforcement action where needed. 🔗 Read the letter in full: https://lnkd.in/e3HnAgNV

💻📱 This #GetOnlineWeek, we’re highlighting the amazing work being done by organisations up and down the country to help improve digital literacy and allow communities to stay connected. We know people without the skills and confidence to navigate the online world can feel isolated - leaving them unable to access services or connect with loved ones. And that's why digital literacy is so important. It's more than just using a computer - it’s about ensuring everyone can enjoy the benefits of being online and get the support they need. We've worked with a number of organisations to help make this happen - including Age UK East London and Red Chair Highlands, who feature in this video. Watch to find out what a difference this support can make to people. #DigitalInclusion #MediaLiteracy
