You asked, we chopped. Loads of Oddboxers tell us they can’t get through a whole cabbage each week – and it’s fair enough, when you look at the size of some of the whoppers we’ve rescued recently. So, in an Oddbox FIRST, we’re trying out half cabbages in your boxes. These beautiful brassicas were originally on the rescue list for being “too many” after a crop flush. But our growers at PC Thorold’s agreed to chop them in half to help our community waste less at home. What do you think? Half the cabbage, double the fun? What else should we try chopping in half? Oddbox is proud to join forces with Too Good To Go, the British Retail Consortium, and over 30 leading UK companies in co-signing an open letter calling for mandatory public food waste reporting. Addressed to the Secretary of State for @DefraGovUk , this collective effort aims to combat the alarming reality that over a third of all food produced goes to waste, costing the UK economy £21.8 billion annually and contributing an estimated 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We believe that mandatory reporting is crucial to driving meaningful change and fostering sustainability across the industry. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/enNfPXkX

“Farming is becoming a riskier business every year – with more extreme weather in the UK, the chances of perfect growing conditions, good yields and good quality is becoming more and more unlikely.” That’s what one of our potato growers told us recently – and many others have said the same. With the increased cost of growing and storing crops, plus extreme weather making ‘good years’ few and far between, many farmers have had to reduce the amount they’re growing to limit the risks involved. While others have had to stop farming altogether. We hit the fields to find out what’s going on – spoiler alert, it includes the shocking revelation that the price of frozen chips is likely to increase. Want to dig in? Head to our blog https://bit.ly/3Osbo6Y and let us know what you think below.

This week you’ve helped us rescue 149,625kg of fruit and veg – that’s some great going. Here are some highlights: 🫑 Nearly 8000kg of peppers were rejected by retailers for being “too odd” – they’re mostly green, but there’s a tinge of red, yellow or orange somewhere on the skin. That’s all it took for these tinge peppers to be left at risk of going to waste! Luckily we’ve found them a home with you, our community – enjoy. 🍐 We’ve scooped up stacks of pears from our grower in Kent after they were left at risk of going to waste. They’re comice pears – a colourful variety originally from France. Did you know these pears were first introduced into the UK all the way back in 1858? Now that’s heritage. 🥬 Our grower in Lincolnshire wound up with “too many” cauliflowers ready all at once, after lots of rain and then mild temperatures (before the current cold snap) caused a crop flush. UK cauliflowers are pretty rare this time of year, so we’re really excited to send them your way. What are your favourites from your box this week? Let us know in the comments.
