OHTA was formed to promote better standards of occupational hygiene practice throughout the world.
About us
OHTA was formed to promote better standards of occupational hygiene practice throughout the world. We develop training materials and make them freely available for use by students and training providers through our website www.ohtatraining.org. We also promote an international qualifications framework so that all hygienists are trained to a consistent, high standard, recognized in all participating countries. OHTA began as an informal collaboration between dedicated occupational hygiene professionals who wanted people around the world to enjoy the benefits of healthy working environments. It has matured into an international framework supported by many national occupational hygiene organisations and the International Occupational Hygiene Association. Our aims are to be: Inclusive Straightforward Transparent Accessible Engaging We believe that adhering to these operating principles will help to grow the global occupational hygiene community and encourage consensus standards. What is occupational hygiene? Occupational hygiene uses science and engineering to prevent ill health caused by the environment in which people work. It helps employers and employees to understand the risks and improve working conditions and working practices. Occupational hygiene practitioners come from varied backgrounds. They can be chemists, engineers, biologists, physicists, doctors, nurses and other professionals all of whom have chosen to apply their skills to protecting the health of workers. Occupational hygiene is multidisciplinary so its practitioners must acquire a broad and solid foundation of knowledge across all these disciplines and more. Common to all practitioners is a core of knowledge that can only be described as"occupational hygiene" and a strategic approach to managing health hazards at work.

Historical Note #3 Since the founding of OHTA, student manuals have been designed to not only grow the skills of those working directly in occupational hygiene, but also to raise OH skills in allied professions such as occupational medicine, environmental, facilities management, and safety. OHTA is pleased that we have recently had several occupational physicians successfully complete (6) training modules and qualify for the ICertOHTA certificate. Dr. Alice Hamilton would be proud! #OHTA #OHLearning #OccupationalHygiene #IndustrialHygiene

Congratulations to Absalom Ndlovu from Zambia on his recent ICertOHTA certification! Absalom started his career as a graduate trainee safety health & environmental officer at Shabanie Mine in 2005 before briefly moving to Zimplats Mines as an occupational hygiene trainee. Absalom then joined the Occupational Health & Safety Institute of Zambia in 2007 as an occupational hygiene practitioner, which is where he is today. Absalom says that this certification has made it possible for him to be recognized and registered by the Southern Africa Institute of Occupational Hygiene, enabling him to develop technical, theoretical, in-depth knowledge of the occupational hygiene field. Above all, Absalom believes that the ICertOHTA has allowed him to join a globally acclaimed family of proud occupational hygiene practitioners who are competent and recognized around the world! #OHTA #OccupationalHygiene #OHLearning

Historical Note #2 Why was OHTA formed? A driving force to create OHTA was the need to increase the number of occupational hygienists by at least 5 X globally. Another goal was to convert the significant need for occupational hygienists to a significant demand for them from employers. From 2005-2006, a group of senior level hygienists from major multinational companies met to set out options. They were later joined by OH organizations including IOHA, AIOH, AIHA, and BOHS. From this collaborative effort, OHTA was officially constituted in 2009. A global achievement indeed for the OH profession! #OHTA #OHLearning #OccupationalHygiene #IndustrialHygiene
