New articles on Friday 26 July 2024: 1) Philippines and Indonesian Nickel Ore Mandatory Reporting – Reminder NorthStandard would like to remind members of the mandatory reporting requirement across all IG clubs when vessels intend to carry Nickel Ore from the Philippines or Indonesia. The mandatory reporting requirement was brought into place in 2012 to enable clubs to highlight to their members the risks involved in the carriage of Nickel Ore from the Philippines and Indonesia and assist members with information on the relevant measures that might be taken to reduce the risk. Read this article in full here 📑: https://ow.ly/3MbT50SKPIU 2) Loading of Iron Ore Fines and Group A cargo from Indian Ports Due to some historic high-profile cases involving the loss of vessels and crews when carrying Indian Iron Ore Fines, vessels heading to Indian ports to load iron ore fines will need to ensure they comply with both the IMSBC code and all local requirements. Industry Insights – IMO GHG strategy under focus NorthStandard and RINA classification society discuss the report “From Today until 2050: Challenges and Opportunities for the Maritime Industry”, published by the RINA Italian Decarbonisation Committee. In 2023, with the revision to the IMO’s Greenhouse Gas Strategy, the shipping industry made significant progress towards confronting the need to reduce, and ultimately remove, its reliance on fossil fuels. The report “From today, until 2050: Challenges and Opportunities for the Maritime Industry”, published by the RINA Italian Decarbonisation Committee starts this process. In comprehensively surveying the risks and opportunities, the pros and the cons, presented by the various marine fuel and energy solutions, it provides a solid platform from which stakeholders can build the coordinated actions necessary to deliver on the IMOs GHG Strategy towards net zero. Spyros Polemis – a message from NorthStandard NorthStandard is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Spyros Polemis. His tenure as Chair of Newcastle P&I, leading up to the North merger in 1998, and his continued service as Chair of the newly formed business, left an indelible mark on our community and the history of the club. Mr Polemis, a stalwart of the shipping community in London, Athens and New York, was a beacon of leadership within our sector. His roles, including Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), and his advocacy for global recognition of the importance of shipping stand as a testament to his impactful leadership. Our thoughts and condolences are with his friends and family at this time.

We are pleased to have recently participated in a workshop with the Hellenic Coast Guard. Representatives from 11 International Group of P&I Clubs (IG) Clubs attended at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy in Piraeus. The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to learn more about the role and the responsibilities of Marine Environmental Protection Directorate of the Hellenic Coast Guard in a maritime casualty. The representatives of the 11 IG Clubs had the chance to introduce themselves, explained how an IG P&I Club operates in a case of a maritime casualty and what kind of support they can offer to the local authorities. The workshop was part of the Group’s wider commitment, under its 2023 Memorandum of Understanding, to collaboration with the Ministry and the Hellenic Coast Guard in connection with the response to serious maritime casualties and incidents. Our colleagues, Harris Papaspyropoulos, Claims Director, Eva Kelesidou, Claims Director - Greece, and Effie Koureta, P&I Claims Director - Greece took part in the session. We would like to thank the Hellenic Coast Guard for the warm welcome and the great interest they demonstrated during the workshop #shipping #maritime
