About us
NECCUS (pronounced nexus) is an alliance of industry, government and experts, united by their determination to drive the changes and support the programmes needed to reduce carbon emissions from industrial sources in Scotland and beyond. Scotland has committed to being carbon Net Zero by 2045 and the rest of the UK has said it will hit this target by 2050. It’s a country that already has proven credentials in the battle to tackle climate change. Over 3/4 of the electricity that Scotland uses comes from renewable sources and it provides a quarter of the UK’s renewable energy. We believe this endeavour needs a multi-partner approach because of the scale of the challenge and the scale of the ambition. NECCUS doesn’t just provide a solution for Scotland. We can deliver Net Zero at pace, with scale, cost effectively, and supporting jobs by leveraging strengths such as: - The significant amount of existing infrastructure (both onshore and offshore), which could be repurposed to support Hydrogen, CCUS, Renewables; cost-effectively and with a lower development risk than new builds. - The largest CO2 storage potential in the UK, with well understood stores, and their co-location with existing infrastructure. Approx. 1/3rd of all UK storage close to pipelines being considered for re-use. Creating a storage opportunity for industrial clusters across the UK and NW Europe. - One of the largest build-outs of Offshore Wind in the UK (3.5GW in operation or construction & up to 14GW in consent or for licensing), helping to energise Green Hydrogen production - A large, highly skilled workforce that can deliver the energy transition. The knowledge, skill sets, technology and manufacturing capability of an existing supply chain which can deliver complex projects. - The wealth of existing projects across Scotland, from the Borders to the Shetlands, covering Green Hydrogen, Blue Hydrogen, Carbon Capture, Carbon transport & storage, CO2 utilisation, Direct Air Capture.

The commissioning of the Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP) by the UK, Scottish, and Welsh Governments - to be delivered by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) - is a key step forward in accelerating the clean energy transition, creating a more coordinated, joined-up approach across the devolved nations. The SSEP will strategically map out new energy infrastructure across land and sea, speeding up the move away from fossil fuels and providing a clear blueprint for developers. By doing so, it will help tackle grid connection delays, support investor confidence and bring long-term benefits to communities. We’re particularly pleased that this plan respects the unique planning considerations in each country, ensuring it reflects each nation’s needs while promoting collaboration across all regions. With the first iteration of the SSEP due in 2026, we’re looking forward to seeing how this vital initiative shapes the future of energy generation and storage - from offshore wind farms to hydrogen assets - while meeting our net zero targets. #IndustrialDecarbonisation #NetZero #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #Collaboration #NESO #SSEP

We are pleased to welcome the joint commitment from The Scottish Government and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to drive forward clean energy technologies and maximise the economic and environmental benefits for Scotland. The shared objective of securing investment in priority supply chains and infrastructure will help unlock the full potential of Scotland's leadership in clean energy, particularly in areas like offshore wind. Effective collaboration is key to then UK reaching its industrial decarbonisation goals. By fostering close partnerships between Great British Energy (GBE) and Scottish public bodies - including Crown Estate Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, and The Scottish National Investment Bank - this agreement will accelerate the pace of clean energy development, create sustainable jobs, and ensure Scotland plays a pivotal role in the UK's just transition. From ports infrastructure to community energy projects, this collaboration offers an exciting opportunity to invest in a greener future for Scotland while boosting local economies and reinforcing energy independence. We look forward to seeing how these partnerships can help transform Scotland’s energy landscape and support the transition to net zero. #NetZero #CleanEnergy #Decarbonisation #EnergyTransition #Scotland #GreenJobs #SustainableFuture #OffshoreWind #SupplyChain Image courtesy of Current News: https://lnkd.in/esq4dKyt

Last night, we had the privilege of representing our members at the launch of the National Energy System Operator (NESO) at the National Museum of Scotland, a significant moment for the future of Britain’s energy system. Thank you to NESO for the invitation to be part of such an important occasion where the Acting Minister for Climate Action Dr Alasdair Allan of The Scottish Government welcomed this new body which will play a vital role in delivering the decarbonisation of electricity and providing the whole system oversight necessary to achieve the UK’s net zero goals. With NESO’s strategic overview across both electricity and gas systems, our energy infrastructure will be more secure, resilient, and future-proof, as we work towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. One of NESO’s first actions will be to guide the UK government on delivering a clean power system by 2030 - a challenging but achievable goal. Last night’s discussions made it clear that NESO’s work will be critical, not just in unifying our approach to energy but in leading the collaborative efforts required across all sectors to decarbonise and secure a greener future for all. #netzero #energytransition #sustainability #neso #cleanenergy #decarbonisation #energysecurity National Museums Scotland

Aberdeenshire North and Moray East MP Seamus Logan hosted 'Making the Energy Transition a Reality' at the Peterhead Port Authority Business Breakfast yesterday in the House of Commons, which our CEO Dr Philippa Parmiter was delighted to attend. Guests included MPs such as Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP, and Kirsty Blackman MP, and senior representatives from wind, hydrogen, CCUS, energy transition businesses and associated service companies. Seamus stated his view that all politicians, whether in Government or opposition, must encourage investment in the infrastructure of the future. Graeme Reid, CEO of the Peterhead Port Authority, highlighted the exciting opportunities coming up for the port, including #hydrogen, #CCUS and #offshore #wind, but raised the issue that without investment there is a risk of losing assets, vessels, expertise and jobs before these new industries develop. This gap would prevent a just transition for the port and its workers. Climate change is already having an impact with the highest number of named storms this year raising repair costs. We also heard from Steve Murphy, Peterhead Port Authority Director and Chief Commercial Officer at Storegga. As the lead on the The Acorn Project, Steve made it clear that the Scottish Cluster isn’t about decarbonisation only for its own sake, important as it is. The Track-2 cluster: 1️⃣ Provides clean power generation for the UK Government's Clean Power by 2030 Mission 2️⃣ Enables economic growth through new low carbon products and new jobs 3️⃣ Protects jobs and communities We are still celebrating the news from last week on the agreements reached with the Track-1 cluster sequencing projects. However, the industry has been investing for many months, and there is an international market for CO₂ storage – let’s not fall behind our European colleagues. Tom Moore presented on the EGL2 SSEN Transmission project. This is a subsea cable which will carry offshore wind power from Peterhead to the Drax Group power station in England. Tom identified many learnings on joint ventures for infrastructure projects, the collaboration needed between key stakeholders in a busy seabed, and the need to contribute to training needs and community benefits. #industrialdecarbonisation #netzero #businessbreakfast Maggie McGinlay
