🌳 Research reinforces that more #sustainable and efficient agricultural production – especially in cattle ranching practices – will be required to meet large-scale #ecosystem restoration goals in #Brazil. 🌳 According to the World Wildlife Fund, the Atlantic Forest once covered over 350 million acres, but human activity has destroyed almost 90% of it, making it one of the most endangered biomes in the world. Much of what forest is left is highly fragmented. 🌳 A new simulation study, a collaboration between King's College London, University of Oxford Nature-Based Solutions Initiative, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria, and the USP - Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, compared various restoration policy options and their effects on cropland, pastureland and biodiversity in Brazil, a country whose economy is heavily dependent on agriculture. 🌳 Published in Environmental Research Letters, this research reinforces that more sustainable and efficient agricultural production – especially in cattle ranching practices – will be required to meet large-scale ecosystem restoration goals. 🌳 The study highlights that supporting smallholder farmers to restore native vegetation on their land would be necessary to reach the ambitious target of restoring 15 million hectares by 2050 – with this group currently exempt under Brazil’s Native Vegetation Protection Law, also known as the ‘Forest Code’. 🔗 👇

Researchers at the Resilience and Development Group of Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford have contributed to the e-book on sustainable finance policy priorities for the new UK government, published by King's Business School. 32 essays from thought-leaders across the sustainable finance ecosystem laid out steps for climate finance policies to be taken in the government’s first 100 days. Emma O'Donnell and Dr Jimena Alvarez came forward with a set of recommendations for aligning financial resilience, climate and biodiversity goals, which included: - integrating ecosystem risk assessment in financial supervision and regulation; - promoting mandatory corporate disclosure frameworks for nature-related financial risk; - developing sectoral nature positive pathways for the UK to guide and mobilise investment; - recognising and managing the systemic-level risks of nature degradation to financial resilience; - facilitating international and interdisciplinary cooperation and engagement. Nature-based solutions are not enough to solve the climate crisis. But they are so much more. In this post, I highlight how nature-based solutions are not enough to solve the climate crisis, but they are a fundamentally important piece of the puzzle. We need to throw everything we have at this existential crisis. But, more importantly, nature-based solutions provide much more than climate fixes. Instead, they focus on tackling widespread societal challenges from disaster risk reduction to food security and human health.

Our research fellow Aline Soterroni will participate in the launch today of the Summary for Policy Makers of the thematic report by BPBES on #Agriculture, #Biodiversity, and #Ecosystem Services. 🌱 The study highlights the importance of an integrated agenda between agricultural production and environmental #conservation in Brazil. It warns about the issues of conventional agriculture and presents solutions to make the sector more competitive and resilient to #climatechange impacts. 💡 With political will, there are viable and effective options for more sustainable agriculture in Brazil, including nature-based solutions. 🎦 The event will be live-streamed at the link below starting at 2 PM (Brazil time): www.youtube.com/@BPBES Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford Oxford Martin School Oxford Net Zero Department of Biology, University of Oxford

1/8 🌟 I recently had the profound honour of hosting people from diverse cultures, histories and disciplines at the Oxford University Museum Of Natural History for the #NbSConferenceOxford 2024: #GrowingPositiveChange. 🌍✨ Over three days, June 18-20, respecting both scientific inquiry and traditional wisdom, blending science and art, we convened over 800 researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and indigenous leaders in person and online to discuss challenges and opportunities for #naturebasedsolutions to global challenges. We will, over the coming weeks, be sharing a report summarising the discussions and key outcomes of the conference, including an action agenda for the nature-based solutions community. We will also be posting recordings of the session on our YouTube channel. So please stay tuned. In the meantime, I want to express my deep thanks to all the people who worked so hard to make it happen...(see linked posts that follow) With thanks to Matthew Mulholland and Aline Soterroni for most of the photos below
