Where is England’s largest temperate rainforest? 🍃 In a valley famous for its rainfall, Borrowdale is every bit as wet as a tropical rainforest but much cooler - resulting in lush woodlands dripping with mosses, ferns and lichens. Today, we’re delighted to declare the Lake District’s Borrowdale rainforest as our newest National Nature Reserve. England’s rainforests are vitally important for wildlife, climate and water management. Working with National Trust and its farming tenants, we hope to make Borrowdale’s precious habitat bigger, better and more connected. National Nature Reserves were established to protect some of England’s most important habitats, species and geology. Borrowdale marks the latest in the King’s Series of National Nature Reserves – creating five declarations every year for the next five years - 25 in total. England’s newest National Nature Reserve is home to some of the oldest animal fossils ever discovered. 🐚 Dating back half a billion years, the fossils found at Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood National Nature Reserve in Leicestershire represent our unique and rare geological heritage. In addition to its spectacular geology, this new National Nature Reserve also features ancient woodland and a rich variety of species. Its close proximity to the City of Leicester makes it easier for people to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of spending time in nature. National Nature Reserves protect some of England’s finest examples of our natural environment and are an important step toward nature recovery in England. We look forward to working with Bradgate Park Trust who have managed the park since the 1920s. A significant step forward for sustainable development and nature recovery. 🏡 Today, with Dorset Wildlife Trust, we’ve announced the purchase of Lyscombe Farm in Dorset through our Nutrient Mitigation scheme. Nutrient pollution is an urgent problem for our waterways and can be disastrous for wildlife. Our Nutrient Mitigation Scheme is helping to reduce pollution and allowing sustainable development to continue. Lyscombe covers 827 acres of chalk downland and farmland and will provide nutrient credits to enable thousands of new homes to be built in the area whilst recovering nature. Rainforest discovery day. Evening bat walk. Wildlife Photography. 🦋 These are just three of over 70 events that are happening across the country this National Nature Reserves Week from 20-31 May. National Nature Reserves were established over 70 years ago to protect some of our most important habitats and the species that call them home. Today, they are still just as vital for wildlife and people too – allowing us to slow down and connect to our natural world in many different ways.
