We're working in partnership to improve access to nature for millions of urban residents 🏙️ We recognise a healthy natural environment is fundamental to everyone’s wealth, health and security. We're delighted to be working with National Trust and National Lottery Heritage Fund to bring more nature rich outdoor places into towns and cities for people to enjoy. Local authorities and community partners can now apply for their share of a £15 million grant to enable more people to benefit from more green space in their town or city. Exciting discovery! A rare group of fungi has been identified in Berkshire. 🍄 Fungi are a mega-diverse kingdom and fundamental to the survival of entire ecosystems, providing essential nutrients and food source for soil, plants and animals. There are more than 18,000 species of fungi in the UK but many species have never been studied. Conservation of fungi is incredibly important, yet much is unknown about this magical kingdom and many species have never been studied. Excitingly, in partnership with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Aberystwyth University and The Crown Estate Natural England’s mycologist, Matt Wainhouse has been using eDNA found in soil samples to study and identify rare tooth fungi found in East Berkshire. The second edition of the Dynamic Dunescapes Sand Dune Manager's Handbook is out now! Sand dunes are incredible habitats for an abundance of wildlife. Sadly, the UK has lost nearly 30% of its dune habitat since 1900. That's why we're part of the Dynamic Dunescapes partnership - working with organisations to restore these wonderful features for the benefit of wildlife and people. The handbook supports site managers and landowners to improve the condition of sand dunes and protect the species that enjoy them. Are you involved in marine conservation, or work in the marine environment? We’d value your comments on our latest draft marine conservation advice package for English waters. 🌊 Berwick to St Mary’s Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) protects nationally important numbers of common eider ducks throughout the year. This site includes the Farne Islands, and together with Coquet Island, are the main breeding areas for common eider on the east coast of England. The MCZ provides a critical foraging extension out to sea for the breeding colony and covers areas which eider are also dependent on for preening, bathing and displaying. These advice packages help to assess the impact of marine activity in marine protected areas. Are you developing a small site and need to create Biodiversity Net Gain? We asked three industry experts to share how they use the Small Site Metric (SSM) and digital tools to redesign small developments, enhancing biodiversity while meeting planning goals. Karl Powell of Kads Design Services, Oliver Lewis of Joe's Blooms and Ella Dangerfield ACIEEM, Professional Ecologist, Burton Reid Associates From transforming species-poor field margins to high-quality grassland and trees, our guest experts show how to achieve Biodiversity Net Gain on small sites. What is the Miyawaki method and how are we using it? 🌳 The Miyawaki method is based on a woodland establishment and management approach developed by Japanese botanist, Dr Akira Miyawaki. The aim is to quickly reconstruct indigenous woodlands on deforested land or areas with degraded soils. It involves densely planting a wide selection of suitable native tree and shrub species into aerated, enriched soil. This method has been successfully utilised in Asia for over 50 years for environmental conservation, water retention, and protection against natural hazards. Natural England is working with The Tree Council, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and five local authorities to trial the Miyawaki method through the Trees Outside Woodland project to help increase urban tree cover across the country, creating more natural spaces for people to enjoy and nature to thrive. 🔗 Read more about the pilot project in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/epWgU-_v 📷: Park Wood Recreation Ground, Kent, Tree Council #TreePlanting #UrbanTrees #UrbanForest #Miyawaki #TreeCover
