We’re reconnecting important habitats for plant and wildlife populations through a new study looking at the environmental importance of brownfield (previously developed) sites. The National Highways Historical Railways Estate (HRE) has teamed up for this essential work with contractor Balfour Beatty plc and Edinburgh Napier University. HRE civil engineer, Colin McNicol, said that the study will help us “enhance our work to repair and maintain our structures and land assets and help us play a part in reducing the current global biodiversity crisis.” Microphones will be used to record sounds in the air and soil. Other techniques including environmental DNA gathering, camera trapping and traditional survey techniques will be vital. Edinburgh Napier University Project Lead, Jennifer Dodd, added: “By combining traditional methods with emerging technologies, this nationally important project will drive forward the development of innovative tools to accurately measure biodiversity”. Our Innovation Showcase event at the Barbican was an opportunity to bring in some fresh thinking and tackle our innovation priorities head on. In a celebration of our work with the Connected Places Catapult, Tier One suppliers gathered with 7 SMEs to focus on National Highways’ priorities across decarbonisation and improving customer experiences of roadworks. Seven trials of technologies and products have been carried out in the past 18 months thanks to competitions organised through the Innovation and Modernisation Designated Fund. This fund is used to invest in and support initiatives that deliver lasting benefits for road users, the environment, and communities across England. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/dm2Q45Em PRG (Scotland) Limited, Circular11, Asset International Structures Ltd, Low Carbon Materials (LCM), Alchera Technologies, RoboK, Wordnerds, Skanska, Costain Group PLC, VINCI Construction, Balfour Beatty plc, Kier Group #NHDesignatedFunds #Innovation #NetZero #Customer

We're encouraging all road users who are travelling this summer to take regular breaks. Driving for long periods of time can increase your chances of becoming tired behind the wheel. For more advice, visit: ▶️ https://lnkd.in/ej3enygj #Holiday #Journey

Our third closure of the M25 (junctions 10-11) last weekend was a complete success, thanks in large part to many thousands of you avoiding the area. The closure was part of our £317m improvement project and saw 72 beams installed to build a new bridge on the western gyratory of the roundabout at Junction 10. This massive project (including 40-tonne beams) will make journeys safer, smoother and will cut pollution in the local area – a win-win for everyone. There won’t be any more full-weekend closures of the M25 this year, but there will be 12-hour closures and some will affect the A3. We’ll keep you fully informed at every step.

Thank you to drivers who used alternative routes or avoided travel over the weekend during the M25 closure, meaning traffic was reduced in the area. We appreciate your patience during these works. We made good progress this weekend, and we were able to open the M25 seven hours earlier than initially planned. We installed a bridge and two overhead gantries as part of ongoing work to make journeys safer and reduce pollution.
