📄 Read our latest research paper 'Global Challenges and Microbial Biofilms: Identification of Priority Questions in Biofilm Research, Innovation, and Policy,' which outlines a roadmap for advancing the field by identifying key research priorities: https://lnkd.in/egBwGebd ℹ️ To guide future research, innovation, and policy development, the study utilised a priority question exercise, a method increasingly employed to frame and set agendas. The study was undertaken by an international group, with members from NBIC, the Center for Biofilm Engineering, SCELSE, AMiCI COST Action, the ESCMID - European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Study Group for Biofilms (ESGB) and partners. 🤝 The research underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the need for standardised approaches in studying and managing biofilms. As microbial biofilms continue to affect various sectors, this prioritised agenda serves as a crucial tool in guiding efforts to harness their potential while mitigating their adverse effects. Creating a fusion between world-class research and industry partners to create breakthrough science and technologies.
About us
The National Biofilms Innovation Centre (NBIC) is the central hub where academia, industry, government, and public policy come together to tackle the grand challenges biofilms present, impacting ~$5 trillion in global economic activity, from food and health to ships, clean water and energy. Funded by the BBSRC, Innovate UK and Hartree Centre, our mission is to establish a network of research and innovation capacity to catalyse partnerships with industry to achieve breakthrough innovations and impact – from industry products and solutions to services and spinouts. We aim to bring together researchers and industry to explore unmet needs and exchange ideas, problems and solutions through roadmaps, workshops and conferences. We plan to invest in future scientists through our PhD and Post-Doc programs, and entrepreneurial training, to grow their expertise, help them better understand the commercial environment and encourage new start-ups. Our approach is interdisciplinary and forward-thinking, underpinned by excellence and our key values: collaborative, transparent, innovative, flexible, responsive, and responsible. Through collaborating to advance relevant research, training future academics and investing in innovation responsibly, our activities will build the environment and mechanisms to efficiently explore and solve unmet sectoral needs, develop strong networks, build roadmaps, influence key stakeholders (regulators, funders and society), exploit emerging breakthroughs and take advantage of new, diverse market opportunities estimated to be worth >£2bn by 2020. Through all this we aim to ensure that the UK will remain a global leader in biofilms R&D. The four core partners are the University of Southampton, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Liverpool and the University of Nottingham. We have now been joined by an additional 27 universities and over 60 industry collaborators in the aim to prevent, detect, manage and engineer solutions in biofilms.

📢 We are pleased to share that our NBIC Flexible Talent Mobility Account (FTMA) call is now open! The FTMA is intended to support secondments and other activities that contribute to the mobility and development of researchers and technical staff in industry and academia. ℹ️ Over this period, NBIC expects to fund successful projects with durations of up to six months. The full economic costs (FEC) of these projects are anticipated to range between £10,000 and £15,000 on average. NBIC will fund 80% of the FEC. 🔬 Activities proposed must align with one or more of the NBIC Strategic Themes to Prevent, Detect, Manage and Engineer biofilms. 📌 As part of UK Research and Innovation’s postgraduate training portfolio, the UKRI Policy Internships Scheme provides an opportunity for UKRI-funded doctoral students to undertake a three-month placement at one of a selected group of influential policy organisations. Currently the scheme supports on average 125 internships per year across all host partners. ℹ️ During their internship, the student undertakes training and experience on a policy topic agreed with their host partner that is relevant to both parties. At the end of the internship, the student is expected to have: 📄 produced a briefing paper 🔎 participated in a policy inquiry and, or 🎤 organised a policy event Apply by 2 October. 📢 Join Us in Shaping the Future of Regulatory Science and Innovation in the UK! 🧑🔬 Regulatory science plays a vital role in evaluating products aimed at controlling biofilms before they hit the market. To ensure these products meet their purpose of reducing or eliminating biofilm formation, scientific evidence is crucial. To bridge the gap between scientific progress, product development, and regulatory decision-making, a collaborative network involving stakeholders from diverse research and industry sectors is needed to bring together researchers, industry representatives, regulatory bodies, and standardisation agencies. 🤝 We are thrilled to announce our recent funding from Innovate UK to establish a UK Regulatory Science and Innovation Network. Our core team, including representatives from NBIC, The Manchester Metropolitan University and Industrial Microbiological Services Ltd, is collaborating to formulate a proposal for this groundbreaking initiative. ☝But we need YOUR input to shape the network’s direction☝️ Please participate in our survey to share your perspectives and needs ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eX7iuUc4 Your invaluable contribution will help guide our efforts as we strive to bridge the gap between scientific progress, product development, and regulatory decision-making.
