WAYS TO WELLNESS tells us about a pilot programme that offers social prescribing support to people on the waiting list for hip and knee surgery. The programme used targeted data to identify and reach those in the most deprived communities. Link workers were given a small ‘client support budget’, this allowed them to make small purchases that made a big difference to help clients with poor mobility to feel more independent. We welcome this new report from the Centre for Mental Health, Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) and Save the Children UK, which highlights the links between poverty and children’s mental health. It recommends that social prescribing is extended more widely to children and young people. We’re working with a range of organisations to develop a vision for social prescribing for children and young people’s mental health, based on the excellent work happening around the country. If you’re a link worker and you work with children and young people, we’d love to hear from you: https://ow.ly/ixYU50SHZiy
📢 Children are being failed by the state's inability to combat the dual crises of poverty and mental ill health. Our new research with Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) and Save the Children UK shows that inadequate levels of benefits and the use of sanctions are driving family poverty and damaging the mental health of both parents and children. Our report highlights the need for decisive government action to eradicate child poverty and deliver on its pledge of a child poverty strategy alongside a cross-government mental health plan.
