A highly-attended CPD session on "The Case for Surface Dressing" was facilitated by our director, Jobert P Fermilan last week. It involved guest presenters Paul Boss, the Chief Executive of the Road Surface Treatments Association, and Chris Allen-Smith, the Head of Profession Asset Management and Maintenance at Hertfordshire County Council.   Last week, Paul and Chris provided their expert opinions on why fixing a large number of potholes isn't a sign of success but rather a sign of failure. INSTITUTE OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERS had the pleasure of organising an interesting session on road maintenance and infrastructure. 1.7 million potholes are fixed annually, despite the central government's pothole repair fund allocation having come and gone. Why? Every year, more potholes are causing damage to cars. Fixing these potholes costs a lot of money - about £107 million in one year in the UK. Instead of just filling potholes, there are better ways to treat roads to prevent potholes from happening. These methods are not being used as much as they should be. This decrease in using better road treatments is costing more money in the long run. It's much cheaper to prevent potholes than to fix them. One of the best ways to keep roads in good shape and prevent potholes is called Surface Dressing. It's not only cheaper but also better for the environment. Jobert Fermilan's comment "Preventative road maintenance is an investment in our future, not just a strategy. It concerns constructing our roads with greater longevity and functionality, and it is clear that in some local authorities this is being managed effectively, while others are in a losing battle with insufficient budgets". We're pleased to announce that our School of Energy, Construction and Environment in our College of Engineering, Environment and Science has joined the Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) as an academia member. LCRIG’s mission is to make the case for local roads through collaboration, innovation, skills and net zero for the highways community and their members. They do this by providing a unique platform for members to engage, providing a vital link between central and local government, supply chain and the broader highways community to ensure ongoing improvements in the highways sector. Dr Neil Tsang, our Associate Professor and Curriculum Lead of Civil Engineering, said: “We are excited to collaborate with LCRIG to help inspire and train the next generation of engineers to improve our transportation system to be more efficient, greener, and sustainable. “Transportation Engineering is one of the core subjects in our degree programme and is a central research theme of our activity. We have many degree apprenticeship students working in the highways and transportation sector. By becoming an Academia Member, it is hoped that this will benefit our students and staff development.” Stephen Austin, our Head of the School of Energy, Construction and Environment, said: “We are delighted to be an academia member of LCRIG. This should help support our students interested in highways and transportation. 🚗🛑 Road Safety Month: Focus on Speed Awareness 🛣️ As we continue our journey through Road Safety Month, today's spotlight is on Speed Awareness. Stopping distances are calculated by combining your thinking distance (how long it takes you to react) and your braking distance (how long it takes for the vehicle to stop). 🚀 Appropriate Speed is always important to consider what your appropriate speed is. Sometimes, the most appropriate speed is less than the posted speed limit. Safe driving is about making choices that prioritize safety over speed. ⛽ Fuel Efficiency: Speeding not only jeopardizes safety but also wastes fuel. A car speeding at 80mph (130km/h) uses 10% more fuel than traveling at 70mph (112km/h).
