    "Think gardening, not architecture. Plant things and see how they grow. Don't constrain yourself by trying to solve every detail." – Brian Eno (world-renowned musician and producer) According to Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, Eno had note cards he dubbed 'Oblique Strategies' that he would pull randomly to help overcome creative blocks in the studio.   The cards helped by disrupting thinking patterns, spurring creativity and inspiring unconventional ideas.   Examples of the prompts included:    👉 "What if we did this twice as fast..." 👉 "What if we turned these words back to front..." 👉 "Decorate, decorate.." 👉 "Tidy up..." 👉 "Simple subtraction..."   Will you be stealing Eno's approach to idea generation?     What’s the worst-kept secret when it comes to inspirational leadership? We’ll start… Listening. ACTIVE listening to be precise. ⚡️ Sounds simple right? But far too many of us are lacking when it comes to this super skill. The issue? We’re not always listening quite as well as we think we are. Have you ever found yourself in a conversation thinking about what to have for lunch? Or the email you’ve been putting off? This is called ‘level 1 listening’ and it will only get you so far. When we listen (we mean really listen) it can help us read between the lines, form deeper connections, and understand what’s really being said. (All must-have skills in and outside of the workplace, we’re sure you’ll agree...) Time for the small print. This skill needs practice (and lots of it) but the rewards are HUGE. If done correctly, it can solve business problems, build meaningful relationships and create those much-needed aha moments in meetings. Ready for a challenge that’ll benefit you as much as the people around you? Here are 3 ways to level up your listening (and your leadership) in one fell swoop. 1. Ask open questions. Bobbette Buster, Author of Do: Listen, suggests asking “What did you do next?” — it’s a simple question but it reflects your curiosity and interest in the person you’re speaking to. Try starting your sentence with words like How, What, Where and Why. 2. Listen, reflect & repeat. Hostage negotiator Chris Voss recommends this action to increase understanding by paraphrasing what you’ve heard, and repeating back key points of the conversation to show that you’re listening. This can be particularly helpful in situations where a problem needs to be solved. Add an open question to help you really dig in, understand, and find a solution that works for everyone. 3. We know it hurts, but put down your phone. Make sure that you’re in a space and state of mind where you can connect fully and really listen.
