📊 With around two in every five Brits (39% of the UK population) requiring debt advice according to most recent available data by the Money and Pensions Service, our latest report calls for the debt collection industry to coordinate a better response for consumers which puts an end to unhelpful practices such as making multiple separate demands for repayments. 💬 “Many of the solutions available to help individuals take control of unmanageable debt today are well established and, if managed properly and professionally, often fit for purpose,” says our CEO, Chris Davis. “The fact remains however, that at the point when a credit account goes into default, interaction between lenders and their customers has not kept apace. We know from our own research that one in five Brits think debt is shameful. It’s a shocking number and a consequence of ineffective collaboration across the debt management sector. 🧘♀️ This month, our MoneyPlus Meet began with our new Wellbeing Counsellor, Jacqueline Eyre Clinical Supervisor, Published Author giving us an introduction talk and taking us through a demonstration of the box breathing technique. This is a great technique that we can all incorporate into our lives whether at work or at home, to practice calming our minds when we feel a little overwhelmed. 🎁 As it was our next quarterly Meet, we also had our second CEO Raffle! Our CEO Raffle is a way to give something back to our team each quarter, to recognise the hard work of all our team members. Last week we welcomed Jacqueline Eyre Clinical Supervisor, Published Author to the team as our full-time Wellbeing Counsellor. As she's a dedicated Samaritan of 10 years, what better day for an introduction than #SamaritansAwarenessDay! 💚 Jacqueline will be providing support to all MoneyPlus colleagues through free, 1-1 counselling sessions, as well as supporting with training initiatives for team members both on a personal and professional level. But our industry can do much more to collaborate and tackle the stigma and unnecessary shame that customers associate with problem debt,” says our CEO, Chris Davis. In January 2024, we commissioned a UK-wide survey which found that one in five people in the UK (22%) think debt is shameful. In collaboration with Etic Lab, a research and design consultancy, we’ve produced a report: Problem Debt in the Cost of Living Crisis and Beyond, to help open up the conversation around debt. 🧾 According to data from the Money and Pensions Service, there's an estimated 9.3 million people in need of debt advice. The stigma attached to personal debt is one of the biggest reasons that people don't feel comfortable to reach out, speak up, and seek help. 📊 Results from our recent UK-wide survey found that only poor hygiene (59%) and looking unkempt (29%) are seen as more shameful than debt. Debt can be like many other challenges that we face in life, in that asking for help can often be the hardest thing. However, as with other issues that we all face, just opening up can be a huge relief in itself.
