Exploring how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are.

About us

The Migration Museum explores how the movement of people to and from Britain across the ages has shaped who we are – as individuals, as communities, and as a nation. Migration is a pressing contemporary issue and is at the centre of polarised political and online debate. But there’s an underlying story of comings and goings stretching back many centuries. And this story goes to the heart of who we are today. Britain has thousands of museums, but none comprehensively focused on this important theme that connects us all. The time is right for a highly relevant, accessible visitor attraction that shines a light on who we are, where we come from and where we are going. From our current home in the heart of Lewisham Shopping Centre, we stage engaging exhibitions and dynamic events, alongside a far-reaching education programme for primary, secondary, university and adult learners. We have a growing digital presence and convene a knowledge-sharing Migration Network of museums and galleries across the UK. 🎉 Our amazing learning team has won the award for Education and Training at the Charity Awards 2024, the longest-running and most prestigious awards scheme in the charity sector 🎉 We run in-person and online workshops and create resources to facilitate informed conversations around migration among primary and secondary school students. We also train teachers in how to approach teaching about migration and integrate it into different subjects, leading with individual migration stories that emphasise lived experience. Since 2020, we have engaged around 17,500 students and 1,300 teachers through our learning programme. 81% of those students said that they had a better understanding of migration after participating in museum activities and 100% of teachers were satisfied with the content and relevance of the workshops. Charity Awards judge Karin Woodley, chief executive of Cambridge House, said the Migration Museum’s learning programme was innovative in approaching the subject of migration in terms of the population and development of the UK as a whole - and doing so in a cross-curricular way which can be a challenge. Liberty Melly, Head of Learning at the Migration Museum, said: “Thank you! We're so proud of everything we've achieved. Young people continue to inspire us, making us believe in a better future. Engaging young people in important conversations and taking the stigma and polarisation out of the topic of migration which is so often used to divide us. Migration goes to the heart of who we are as individuals, communities, and as nations." A special thank you goes to our education funders, our trustees and education committee, and amazing volunteers and placement students for their ongoing support and commitment. As well as our Teach First summer placements, exam boards, and teacher training partners for their invaluable contributions. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of everyone involved. Big thanks to Jim Richardson for this write up all about our work that Aditi Anand shared at the MuseumNext event in London recently: https://lnkd.in/e7yHiHWG It's a great summary of our journey over the last 10 years, our approach in terms of temporary homes, our interactive exhibitions, plans towards a collection and ultimately our permanent home in the City of London. 👀 Excellent intro for all our new followers here! It leads with reflections on our unique current home in a vibrant shopping centre in Lewisham thanks to our Landlords and partners Landsec.

⚽ Have you seen these graphics on social media or in pubs over the past week? Huge organic reach in the millions - hope they've reached you... At the Migration Museum, we’re putting migration at the heart of our national story – and with tens of millions of us watching the Euros this summer, where better to start than with football? ⚽ Read on about our campaign: England’s men’s football team have reached the final of Euro 2024, and during their run to the final, we’ve teamed up with creative company Wonderhood Studios on a social media and out-of-home advertising campaign highlighting how migration has shaped the England team. Ahead of England’s quarter-final against Switzerland last Saturday, we posted a video graphic on social media and 250 pub screens across the country showing what England’s starting line-up would look like without players either born outside the UK, or with at least one parent or grandparent born abroad. And at full time, we updated the graphic on pub screens and shared a follow-up graphic on socials highlighting that without England’s five successful penalty takers, all of whom were the children or grandchildren of immigrants, England would be out. Following England’s semi-final win over the Netherlands, we posted another responsive graphic with the message ‘England Doesn’t Win Without Migration’, centred on the fact that both of England’s goal scorers are the children of immigrants. The aim of the campaign is to place migration at the heart of fan conversations and encourage people to think about the connections between football and migration.  Migration is often seen as a divisive issue. But it has the potential to unite us through shared experiences and family histories. If you peel back the layers of any of the players in the England squad further, you will almost certainly find migration stories – whether of immigration, emigration – or both. And migration has shaped more than just the England men’s football team – it goes to the heart of who we all are, where we’ve come from and where we’re going – as individuals, as communities, and as nations. The campaign has gone viral, reaching 3 million people and counting on social media, inspiring other organisations to share and post similar graphics, and sparking radio and TV coverage. And just like England’s run at Euro 2024, our campaign isn’t over yet! We’ll be sharing further real-time and reactive content during the final on Sunday – follow us on social media to see what’s coming next – and help us to spread the word. Massive thanks to the brilliant team at Wonderhood Studios for all of their work in creating and delivering this campaign. And big thanks to the7stars and Alight Media for providing and facilitating the pub screen out-of-home placements.
