Today, Anjem Choudary has been found guilty of directing a terrorist organisation following an investigation from the Met, Counter Terrorism Policing, New York Police Department, Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other partners. London's Metropolitan Police Service | New Scotland Yard
About us
The Metropolitan Police Service is famed around the world and has a unique place in the history of policing. Our headquarters at New Scotland Yard - and its iconic revolving sign - has provided the backdrop to some of the most high profile and complex law enforcement investigations the world has ever seen. Founded by Sir Robert Peel in 1829, the original establishment of 1,000 officers policed a seven-mile radius from Charing Cross and a population of less than 2 million. Today, The Met employs 32,000 officers together with specialist support staff and more than 2,500 volunteer police officers in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary. As well as policing London’s 620 square miles and 8.9million population, The Met has national responsibility for a variety of specialist policing units and hosts the UK’s Counter Terrorism Policing HQ. The Met is one of the largest employers in London and with a broad range of roles, from neighbourhoods to firearms. We’re recruiting people who want to make a difference, to help people and begin a career in a brilliant organisation, performing an exciting and extremely rewarding role. Today, now more than ever, is the time to join the Met. www.met.police.uk/careers

We’re tackling violence against women and girls in the way we deal with terrorism. The early results from the Met’s data-led targeting of the 100 most harmful offenders suggests we’re already seeing more dangerous men brought to justice and put behind bars. The Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and NPCC Deputy Chief Constable Maggie Blyth have reflected on the publication of a report into Violence Against Women and Girls. Violence against women and girls is endemic, systemic and a threat to society on the same scale as terrorism. In the article below, which first appeared in The Times in my name and that of DCC Maggie Blyth, I set out the challenge we face, how policing is responding and why we need the whole of society to step up alongside us.

We know criminals are targeting people enjoying London’s nightlife to get their phones. They want unlocked devices to access banking apps and personal info. We are putting more officers into hotspots and working with industry on better security. You can help too by staying alert and never parting with an unlocked phone. Our officers have made 780 rape related charges in the last twelve months. The V100 tool uses data analytics to identify and target the 100 men who pose the highest risk to women, helping officers prioritise their action. The data led approach means officers can track the men’s online history evidencing that they had been sexually exploiting young girls. Read the article to find out more. ⬇️

"I was concerned for members of the public and knew we had to stop him" Hear the harrowing details of how PC Alannah Mulhall and PC Joseph Gerrard put their lives on the line to stop a knife-wielding man in 2022. Last night, they were both honoured with a police bravery award for their quick actions in extremely dangerous circumstances, which left both of them severely injured. Despite everything, they returned to duty in 2023. Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley joined them on GMB this morning and said: "Their energy, their resilience, their dedication and their vocation is really, really inspiring."

Lindsey Chiswick, the Met’s director of intelligence, spoke at the Future of Britain Conference about how we can reimagine the fight against crime by using data and AI to make communities in London safer now and in the future. As an example, the V100 uses data analytics to identify and target those suspected of causing the greatest harm to women and girls. Facial recognition technology is also aiding us in identifying and removing harmful criminals. In the first half of this year more than 250 arrests have been made by officers with the assistance of live facial recognition technology. These arrests include offences relating to violence against women and girls, breaching sexual harm prevention orders and various levels of assault. Officers still have to verify alerts, review the information and make a decision on whether there are grounds for arrest. This is traditional policing just augmented by modern technology. The Met is harnessing the power of data and AI to be more effective. We are transparent in our approach, building trust with the communities we serve. This is precise, community-based crime fighting. Officers PC Brickley and PC Debell had the honour of hosting German exchange officers Paula and Marius last month. The two German officers got to experience a ride-along with Emergency Response Team, exposing them to diverse range of calls from and giving them insight into the realities of policing in London. They spoke in great lengths about the similarities and differences between our policing techniques and were blown away by the patience that British police officers have when dealing with difficult individuals. The two visiting officers were also taken to Gravesend Public Order centre where they were shown the training scenarios for Level 2 officers and got to see The Met’s public order tactics in action. Officer Jung said about the experience, “We would like to thank the two officers for this experience, we had a really great time and found the experience very eye opening”. It was a great experience for our officers and we look forward to hosting more exchange programmes in the near future.

We are strengthening neighbourhood policing to make it even more effective. In Lewisham, officers are responding to antisocial behaviour, retail crime and violence. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and local teams welcomed Home Secretary Yvette Cooper today to discuss our work. Local officers are at the centre of our work to cut crime and rebuild trust. They are community crime fighters, focusing on what matters most to local people. This weekend one prolific Lewisham offender was charged with 70 offences including shoplifting by the town centre team.
