This month, we had the privilege of speaking with Teri-Ann Baldwin, a dedicated Head Veterinary Nurse at our clinic in Wales, and the nurse liaison on the committee for the BVLQBTQ community. “Growing up in a typical Welsh Valleys community I very much hid my sexuality for a long time; even as a teenager growing up in the 2000s there still seemed to be a stigma surrounding being part of the LGBTQIA community. I decided not to really come out as such, but I just started living how I wanted to without apologising or having to justify myself to others. I started to openly share LGBTQIA articles, pictures and memes and if people didn't like it then I simply didn't need them in my life.  A few years ago, I really started to question my gender identity and after a lot of internal reflection, I realised that the term non-binary fit me and have been using they/them pronouns.  As a member of the LGBTQIA community I would have no hesitations in recommending LGBTQIA colleagues or clients to come to this clinic. We still have a long way to go within the profession and I hope that my story helps others understand how their lack of willing to understand or accommodate people of different sexual orientation and genders impacts the individual. Now, more than ever, we need to support each other. We also need our non-LGBTQIA colleagues to support us outwardly and not with performative allyship. Luckily, my colleagues at Medivet Merthyr Tydfil have been nothing short of amazing and supportive with all that I throw at them!”  If you’re a member of the LGBTQIA community, coming into the Veterinary world you’re able to reach out to multiple support groups. As Teri-Ann shares,   “A lot of colleges and universities can now signpost students and professionals towards BVLGBT , there are also a wide range of organisations which can help the community coming in. Vetlife , Samaritans and the Switchboard - National LGBTQ Support Line are all available to help.   The BVLGBT Committee is also available for colleagues to sign up to and become part of a supportive community.” A big thank you to Teri-Ann Baldwin for sharing their story. Meet our Medivet Camberwell Branch Partners, Bruno and Bert, who shared their story for Pride.  Bruno shares: “Being a vet is not easy. The worry about misdiagnosis, the bleeding spays, and the heaving waiting room are some of the common worries of our daily life. Add to this, the insecurities of self-doubt of having imposter syndrome, something we’re all familiar with from the start of our careers; it all gets quite overwhelming. And then to top it all – if you identify as LGBTQ , it’s the fear of discrimination, the feeling that your mannerisms are being watched, the thought of ‘not being taken seriously’ if they find out – adds even more pressure to the idea of how one should look and behave in the workplace. I am now a Branch Partner, and I couldn’t be prouder of the place I work in. Bert and I thrive to create an open and friendly environment for everyone. We know there is always space for improvement, so we recently took the team to Drag Bingo, it was a hit, and it might become a usual!” Bert goes on to say: “Since working at Medivet, I have always felt comfortable sharing this part of my identity. Over the years working in this field, I have learned to appreciate the beauty in our differences.”  We all have a responsibility to make this world a better place. Those words may sound grand, but even the smallest gesture can make a difference to someone who is struggling; a cup of tea and a catch up, having interest in what they did over the weekend or simply by putting up a pride flag.  If you're facing challenges, remember there are wonderful support groups like Vetlife , Samaritans, and Switchboard - National LGBTQ Support Line ready to help.     #Medivet #PrideMonth #PrideAwareness #BranchPartnership

To continue Pride month, we want to share Deputy Head Veterinary Nurse, Kirsty's story. “I have been very supported and accepted within my team and at my workplace, as well as in the wider community. I feel like I’m able to speak freely about my life and share this with my work colleagues. I know that every person is different, and everyone has their own struggles; different backgrounds and work settings. I would love for everyone to be able to express themselves freely and be confident to speak their truth without judgement being passed. My message to everyone is to be kind, have open minds, and to not judge and be accepting of everyone’s individual lifestyles, feelings, beliefs and values.” If you're facing challenges, remember there are wonderful support groups like Vetlife , Samaritans, and Switchboard - National LGBTQ Support Line ready to help. #Medivet #PrideMonth #PrideAwareness

We want to share what Pride means to Regional Operations Director, Daniel Sutcliffe. “When I am asked – why do I fly the rainbow flag – I’m honest. I do it to celebrate those who’ve paved the way before us, allowing me to live my life the way I do, and raise awareness that there is still a long way to go. Let’s celebrate progression, acceptance and love. And it’s the biggest party of the year!!” Did you know that a British Veterinary Association (BVA) report from 2019 revealed that 29% of veterinary professionals have experienced discrimination in their workplace, and 21% have witnessed it first-hand? If you're facing challenges, remember there are wonderful support groups like Vetlife , Samaritans, and Switchboard - National LGBTQ Support Line ready to help. #Medivet #PrideMonth #PrideAwareness

Clinical Governance Director at Medivet and Mum of One :)

Yesterday, I felt very welcome and delighted as always to visit Pete Holland, Heather Bacon and the team at the University of Central Lancashire Veterinary school. I was lucky enough to see the amazing new vet school facilities- where students will be taught in simulations of real life veterinary practice. Students will experience challenging situations, surgical emergencies and get the chance to practice much needed clinical skills from the safety of vet school. I was totally blown away, and even a little envious- I would have loved these facilities in my vet school days! I was also delighted to hear about the success and enjoyment of the first year students. I shared that at an industry event recently, a student actively found me to say thank you for the support of Medivet in supporting in the initiatives surrounding equality, inclusion and diversity in the veterinary school. From supporting digital devices to reduce the impact of digital poverty, to offering non-commital bursaries and hardship funds- I am so proud of the way that Medivet has chosen to give back to a profession that I truly love. I was also thrilled to hear that the initiatives are making an impact- enabling Vet School to be a viable option for all, regardless of background. We were also delighted to talk about our opportunities to support the second year students and beyond- I am so excited to tell you more over the next year about this incredible university and what we are achieving together! #medivetlife #student #vetschool #veterinarycanbeacareerforall
