The UK National Databank of Moored Current Meter Data (1967-) is #DatasetOfTheWeek The data set comprises more than 7000 time series of ocean currents from moored instruments. The records contain horizontal current speed and direction and often concurrent temperature data. They may also contain vertical velocities, pressure and conductivity data. The majority of data originate from the continental shelf seas around the British Isles (for example, the North Sea, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea) and the North Atlantic. Measurements are also available for the South Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Data collection commenced in 1967 and is currently ongoing. Sampling intervals normally vary between 5 and 60 minutes. Current meter deployments are typically 2-8 weeks duration in shelf areas but up to 6-12 months in the open ocean. About 25 per cent of the data come from water depths of greater than 200m. The data are processed and stored by the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) and a computerised inventory is available online. Data are quality controlled prior to loading to the databank. Data cycles are visually inspected by means of a sophisticated screening software package. Data from current meters on the same mooring or adjacent moorings can be overplotted and the data can also be displayed as time series or scatter plots. The UK Environmental Observation Framework is joining up with the British Ecological Society and UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) to run a one-day National Environment Monitoring Conference. 📅10 December 2024. 📍Liverpool, UK This one-day conference, taking place the day before the BES Annual Meeting, will bring together those who either deliver, use or could benefit from information provided from a wide range of national monitoring activities across the four nations. Marine rock samples collected by dredge or remotely operated vehicles (ROV) are an exceptional resource of immense scientific value which help inform geoscience research and contribute to the NERC: Natural Environment Research Council research areas including Earth resources, mantle and core processes, physics & chemistry of Earth materials and volcanic processes. Currently, there is no repository for marine rock samples collected by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funded scientists and research ships so a Rock Store Working Group, involving the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the British Geological Survey, the British Antarctic Survey, the University of Southampton, University of Strathclyde, The University of Edinburgh and The University of Manchester are inviting the UK’s marine science community to complete a survey which will help define the future requirements for marine dredge rock and ROV rock samples facilities. Results will be provided to the NOC Association of Marine Science National Capability Beneficiaries to consider next steps. The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is the accredited MEDIN Data Archive Centre for bathymetric data. The UKHO stores, processes and disseminates bathymetric data gathered around the British Isles. All UK Government sponsored survey data gathered in support of charting (Civil Hydrography Programme data) around the British Isles is held and made accessible. Data sets supplied by other government survey organisations are also held and made accessible where possible along with data sets gathered by Port Authorities, environmental organisations and academic institutes. Marine Traffic and AIS Survey from Summer 2023 is #DatasetOfTheWeek 🛳️🚤🚢🛥️ This report presents analysis of the summer 2023 vessel-based traffic survey which has been undertaken from the survey vessel Karima between the 14th and 28th June 2023. The primary objective of the survey was to identify and validate the routing of vessels and the level of vessel activity within a 5 nautical mile (nm) buffer around the Search Area. This was achieved by recording, in real time, the positions of vessels within range of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver and Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA). This survey supplements a previous survey undertaken in January 2023 to ensure full compliance with Marine Guidance Note (MGN) 654 (Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), 2021), which requires a minimum of 28 days seasonally-weighted data comprising AIS, Radio Detection and Ranging (Radar) and visual observations.
