Encouraging Black, Asian and other ethnic talent into media, providing a support and mentoring network so they flourish
About us
MEFA was founded in 2017 by Naren Patel and a group of diverse leaders in the industry who wanted to close the representation gap in an industry they loved, but failed to represent them and their communities. It is run by our founder Naren Patel, General Manager Nikki Sehgal and a network of professionals volunteering their time to help fulfil MEFA’s mission. Membership is entirely free for Black, Asian and Ethnic minority talent working in the media industry. The results from the All in Census from the Advertising Association were released in June 2021 and provided data on representation as well as lived experiences for people from ethnic minority background. Sadly, 1 in 7 people from ethnic minority backgrounds have experienced racism at work and 1 in 4 are looking to leave the industry. MEFA wants to be the force for change that helps our industry overcome these issues. At MEFA, our mission is to help Black, Asian and ethnic minority talent thrive in the media and advertising industry, and ultimately, increase the ethnic diversity of the media and advertising industry in the UK. Over the past three years, we have built a strong community of diverse talent at all levels. Through our work, our events and our forums, we have built a safe environment for connecting, sharing, learning, and for driving change. Our three pillars are Recruit, Retain and Rise. We focus on the recruitment of diverse talent, the retention of diverse talent, and the career development of our members.

Kicking Off South Asian Heritage Month with a Bang! 💥 Last week, we had the honour of hosting an exclusive screening of Defiance Episode 1: Fighting the Far Right, proudly sponsored by Channel 4 🙌🏽 This thought-provoking documentary delves into the history of far-right movements and highlights the brave individuals from the South Asian community who stood up against them. We were privileged to have a panel discussion featuring the documentary’s executive producer, James Rogan and series producer, Anoop Pandhal, moderated by our General Manager, Nikki Sehgal. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the night a success. Here's to a fantastic month ahead, celebrating the richness of South Asian culture and heritage! 🎉✨ #MEFA #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM2024 #Defiance #documentary #community

To kick off ✨South Asian Heritage Month✨at Microsoft Advertising it was fantastic to have Nikki Sehgal, Sharon Lloyd Barnes and Ravleen Beeston hosted by Supriya Dev-Purkaystha (She/Her) on a panel discussing the disparities and experiences within the South Asian community. The discussion focused on findings from the Media For All [MEFA] Circles study and the Advertising Association All In Census data. It was an intimate and insightful dialogue on the importance of understanding diverse experiences within workplace social settings, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and the challenges of balancing cultural and family expectations with work life. Overall, it was an inspiring conversation, reminding us all to be more curious and not to be bystanders. Thanks to all attendees and allies 🧡 Great seeing you Naren Patel

What does freedom mean to you? South Asian Heritage Month calendar has kicked off and this year I am embracing the theme “Free to be me” - my accent, my voice, my colour… An incredible event hosted by Channel 4 and Media For All [MEFA] - an eye-opener for someone like me, who was always curious about what being "South Asian" truly meant since I only moved here in my late 20s. My upbringing is so different from that of my peers who were born here, yet we have a common thread that binds us together. And now, with two young daughters who are living in both cultures, the experience is even more profound. One thing that we as South Asians need to do more is own our space and tell more stories about our challenges. We have an uncanny resilience to just keep carrying on. It’s time to break the generational cycle and share our voice to remove the unconscious bias that exists in this day and age. "Nothing changes if nothing changes" 😊 Still buzzing with the documentary series created by @James Rogan and Anoop Pandhal which brought me closer to my heritage. Thank you Naren Patel and Nikki Sehgal - moments like these truly highlight why Media For All [MEFA] network is so special! #FreeToBeMe #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #SAHM2024

Thank you Media For All [MEFA] for kicking off South Asian Heritage Month with such a brilliant event and thank you Channel 4 for hosting. Nikki Sehgal, Naren Patel are legends. Though this was the second time I saw the program, it was even more thought provoking. The brilliant production team joining to answer questions and discuss how relevant it is for so many of us; the conversations it enabled us to have with our families. I am not surprised the production team needed moments to breathe. If lessons had been learnt in the case of Gurdip Singh Chaggar, then maybe Stephen Lawrence may not have happened. Whilst I have traveled a lot and even lived in other countries, the UK is the only home I know. Sunday hurt but I was proud of the football team. However, some of the recent divide and conquer politics has left me deeply concerned. As I was born after this deep division in the 70's- I never felt the outright vitriol but recently I think it has returned but in a much more subtle manner. As an accountant I have looked at the data that backs this. Some people know how this has impacted me in recent times but all I can do is thank my fellow MEFA members, accountants, ethical lawyers, the creative industry particularly NABS and Digiladies for showing we are better together and helping me overcome it. My family and friends it goes without saying have just been my rock. *Let's remember united we stand, divided we fall. One other special mention is to Richard Bon; many leaders have talked about diversity, he has consistently and quietly showed up to the events and supported initiatives like the ethnicity pay gap reporting. We have seen the difference it has made for the gender pay gap. I hope other leaders also reduce the say-do gap and show up. Just to also add, i hope James Rogan and Anoop Pandhal can also obtain funding for more of these programmes. It really was great to talk about diversity in creative sectors Anoop

Today marks the beginning of South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM). On Tuesday this week, we at Media For All [MEFA] partnered with our sponsor, Channel 4, for a special screening of the three-part docu-series Defiance: Fighting the Far Right in honour of #SAHM2024 I had the immense pleasure of interviewing the executive producer, James Rogan, and series producer, Anoop Pandhal. They both shared incredible insights into creating the documentary and recalled powerful stories from the contributors. These stories are vital to tell, as they unearth our histories and create a legacy and archive for future generations. I am deeply proud to be a conduit in telling these narratives and to share these conversations with our industry and communities. Marking this month is not just about celebration; it’s about recognising the importance of our contributions and the richness of our cultures. Credit to Shaminder Nahal for commissioning this fascinating and vital body of work, and thank you to James, Anoop and their team for digging deep to bring audiences a piece of history once lost in time. Thank you to the team at Channel 4 for the collaboration; Bina Booth Emma Flaxman Ashanti Barrett, Ava Cutts, Owen Twyford Sean Stanley and to my team Naren Patel Elaine Wylie Crystal Nyarko A. for pulling off one of MEFA's best events. ...a special thank you to Nas Parkash for opening doors.
