NEW RESEARCH: Electrification of industrial processes can deliver significant energy efficiency gains. This excellent new policy brief demonstrates this using Germany as a case study. The policy brief also provides a useful analysis of technical applications, barriers to uptake and policy solutions. The graphic in this post shows the savings potential for selected applications in TWh (bars) and the efficiency gains specific technologies can deliver (blue dots represent applications listed earlier in the policy brief in Figure 4). The primary energy fallacy is the idea that all primary energy from fossil fuels must be replaced with an equivalent amount of clean energy. BUT: This is not necessary because conversion losses do not need to be replaced. More than 2/3 of all primary energy is lost as waste heat. I first heard Michael Liebreich use this term which captures this phenomenon nicely I think.

Process heating is by far the largest energy use in industry and the main source of greenhouse gas emissions. Roughly three quarters of overall emissions from industry are related to the combustion of fossil fuels for process heating. The good news: most of it can be electrified with existing technologies. This is a great example of how coupling thermal storage with heat pumps lowers the cost of electrifying industrial heat. Heat pumps alone cannot take full advantage of this opportunity. #energystorage #industrialdecarbonisation #heatpumps
