Tony is a second generation migrant with a proud Hong Kongese heritage. He is the master hand behind The Steam Room, my most trusted dry cleaning guy, and my first design client. “Laundry was one of the most common businesses that East Asian migrants pursued when immigrating into a Western society (especially in the States). We chose careers that were deemed inferior to avoid being seen as “job takers” by the locals.” said Tony. When we started the project in early 2018, the shop was in a dire need of a transformation. As East Asians diasporas, we spent many weeks exploring what migration, mixed culture and identity meant for the in-betweeners like us: neither here, yet neither there. “East (Asia) meets East (London)” is the story behind the new Steam Room, a chic exterior that blends into the vibrant Kingsland Road with a welcoming interior arrangement for customers, neighbours and visitors to feel a different laundry experience from history. Massive respects to all the migrants and their faith in the unknowns. Cheers to their courage, and let's celebrate migration. _________ The Steam Room has a documentary directed by Jane Zheng, currently showcasing at Lethaby Gallery in Granary Square.
