Did you know Town Planning was an Olympic event until 1948? And Team GB won gold in 1932! And a big congrats to our fantastic Team Midlands, who won a planning appeal for a great new retirement community in Ledbury last week.🥳🏅 The appeal process highlighted the substantial need and benefits of specialist older persons housing, and their importance to not just retirees in the area, but to the wider housing market as well, and contributed to the Inspector granting us permission. Our team have drawn on a breadth of expertise to get this success – well done everyone: Rachel Clare, our key planning witness in her first ever Appeal, Carla Fulgoni, Sam Brownhill, Brandon Hall, and our consultants, John Barrett, Justine Lloyd, Harry Cross and David Beardmore. #planningappeal #retirementcommunities #olympicgames2024

Meet our two most recent centenarians in the McCarthy Stone community: WWII Heroes John Elliott, Stiperstones Court, and Daw Roberts, Speakman Court. Daw will be celebrating with her two children and five grandchildren at a local Altrincham pub, as well as a party at Speakman Court with fellow homeowners. She was extremely excited to receive her telegram from the King – “It’s quite amazing!” she said. She also has eight great grandchildren – with a ninth on the way. Daw worked at a factory on Lancaster bombers during the Second World War, living through bombing raids and close calls – but also enjoyed going out dancing in Manchester. In later years she took up swimming, badminton and bowls, and now spends her time cooking which she hugely enjoys! John had a wonderful day celebrating with friends at his development in Shrewsbury – with plenty of cake of course. He is a WWII veteran and fought in the Battle of Le Havre in 1944. He has always enjoyed swimming and dancing as well – and has even danced at the Tower ballroom in Blackpool! When asked his secret to longevity he says its staying active “And I’ve eaten an orange a day nearly all my life which has kept the colds away.” Across our 530 developments we have so many homeowners with remarkable tales to tell, and none more so than those who’s experiences span over 100 years! Happy birthday to both Daw and John.🥳🎂 #retirementliving #retirementcommunities #centenarians #happybirthday #100today

It’s Net Zero Week! At McCarthy Stone we pride ourselves on operating sustainability and supporting our supply chain with the Net Zero Agenda. To celebrate and raise awareness within the business, this week we hosted a webinar focussing on Whole Life Carbon at McCarthy Stone. Lindsay Roberts, Sustainability Manager, was joined by speakers Andrew Heath-Richardson, Nathan Adams, Senior Sustainability Consultant at Focus Consultants, and Tom Jewell, Divisional Estimator to explore our Whole Life Carbon agenda. The webinar discussed the work we have been doing to baseline and reduce our whole life carbon emissions, and explain next steps to further reduce emissions and engage with our supply chain and partners. We revealed the use of an internal tool that has been developed for our teams to use and explore designs that reduce our whole life carbon emissions. Net Zero Week is ultimately about people and actions, bringing all areas of a business together to support Net Zero ambitions. #NetZeroWeek #NetZeroWeek2024 #wholelifecarbon #greatplacetowork

Today marks the 40th work anniversary of our wonderful colleague Nikki Perrett, Accounts Assistant. Nikki joined McCarthy Stone straight out of school at just 16 years old in July 1984. Throughout her time here she has experienced many changes, different CEOs, multiple office locations, ownership structures and rebrandings - but has always had a professional yet fun and very enthusiastic working style, with an infectious smile and energy! Nikki has built a reputation for her breadth of knowledge and experience of the business whilst being a loved and respected member of both the Accounts Payable team and company-wide. Nikki should be extremely proud of her successes and dedication over the past 40 years - thank you and congratulations from all of your colleagues. #longserviceaward #greatplacetowork #40yearsservice

Responding to Labour’s election victory, CEO John Tonkiss suggests that Labour can make older people the ‘silver saviours’ of society. He said: “We congratulate Sir Keir Starmer MP and the Labour party on their victory, but the hard work starts now. “Labour must use its mandate to ensure older people are no longer the forgotten part of the policy debate, particularly when it comes to housing and care. Many of those aged 75 and over want to move somewhere better suited to their changing needs, but too often they find that they are left with no choice but to move into residential care. The UK needs a revolution in its delivery of high-quality housing suitable for its ageing population, be it more bungalows, retirement communities, better care options or incentives to downsize. “That’s why McCarthy Stone is calling on Ministers to swiftly implement the recommendations made by the Older People’s Housing Taskforce and to reform the National Planning Policy Framework to ensure an adequate supply of older people’s housing. “Moving to a home better suited to their needs is not only good for older people, it addresses many of society’s challenges – it will help get Britain building again, it will unlock investment and growth, it will free up existing homes for younger people, and it will reduce pressure on the NHS. The new Labour Government can help older people to become our silver saviours.” Read our full response to the election here: 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/eAsZNRkB
