Five years ago, Lloyd's of London issued a mandate with the aim of tackling the challenges of insurers’ exposure to silent cyber coverage. Under the mandate, which came into effect on 1 January 2020, insurance companies must state whether first party policies cover cyber-related losses such as cyber-attacks and loss of data. Since then, the Lloyd's mandate has been rolled out in various business classes and has led to a gap in non-malicious cyber coverage across cyber and professional indemnity (PI) cover. Speaking to Insurance Insider, Bhavik Desai, Director of PI discusses this gap and how Markel is addressing it in line with recent events including the CrowdStrike IT outage which took place earlier this year: https://lnkd.in/ed-uUh7J #Cyber #PI #Underwriting #AI

In recognition of Black History Month, Markel colleagues joined others from across the London insurance market to learn, celebrate and reflect on Black history and culture at an industry event earlier this week.     At the event, titled Reclaiming History – Untold Stories of Britain’s Diverse Heritage, attendees heard from keynote speaker, David O., a British-Nigerian historian, author, presenter and BAFTA-winning filmmaker, who shared his personal story of discovering Black British history that had been left out of textbooks when he was at school.    David emphasised the importance of reclaiming these stories, not only to celebrate the contributions of Black British people to our shared history, but also to empower us to confront some of the more challenging truths.    Our Chief Operations Officer, Carys Lawton-Bryce, gave the closing statement and introduced the charity partner of the event, The Black Curriculum. One of their main goals is to embed Black histories into the national curriculum and empower young people and educators to engage with Black British History year-round.     After the talks, there was a raffle to raise money for The Black Curriculum, and enjoyed stalls from Black-owned businesses, as well as Inclusion@Lloyd’s partner networks.     Thank you to David for sharing such important insights and to all the partners and organisers of this fantastic event, which also included AIG, BMS Group, Equity City, iCAN: The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network, The Hartford, CNA Hardy and Tokio Marine Kiln.     In case you missed it, you can rewatch a recording here: https://lnkd.in/eFbnr2gB    #WeAreMarkel

We're delighted to announce that Nick Line, our Chief Underwriting Officer, will be assuming the role of Chair of Inclusion@Lloyd's, commencing next year. Nick will be taking on this role following Dominic Christian's decision to step away after 10 influential years in this position. Chair of Lloyd's, Bruce Carnegie-Brown, announced this update at the closing ceremony of the Dive In Festival last week, saying: "After 10 years overseeing the growth of Dive In, championing culture transformation across our market, [Dominic has] decided to step down from Chair and pass on the baton."   We'd like to thank Dominic for his significant contribution to making the market a more diverse and inclusive place to work during the past decade, and to wish Nick the best of luck in his upcoming position.   #InclusionAtLloyds #DiversityAndInclusion #WeAreMarkel

Last week, Kav Benepal, together with other experts, took part in an EY panel, titled ‘Decoding the future of underwriting’, which considered the biggest challenges in underwriting today and the greatest opportunities in underwriting to drive value creation, including artificial intelligence. “According to hyperexponential, 80% of underwriters spend two hours of their working day on data entry, while 40% of underwriters spending more than three hours! This is a damning statistic that should be our North Star as we drive transformation across the underwriting function. In the past, companies have occasionally made missteps when they have tried to impose change. Lessons have been learned and, today, as an industry we are and must continue to be business-led – that is what is producing better, longer-lasting and more impactful change. This is what exactly we’re doing at Markel as part of our Portfolio Development Solutions team.” #AI #DigitalTransformation #Innovation

After an incredible week of events, discussions, debates and celebrations, the Dive In Festival 2024 has come to a close.   As Global Festival Partners, this partnership embodies our commitment to creating and fostering an environment where everyone can thrive, and this week we've seen the industry come together to continue working towards a more inclusive environment for everyone.   Over the past three days, we've sponsored events touching on important subjects, including the importance of D&I and what more can be done to continue driving progress in the industry, as well as how to build a resilient mental wellbeing in today's ever-evolving world.   In our London office, we were delighted to host 'Out and Proud in the Workplace' – a panel discussion facilitated by Darius Gervinskas from Diversity Role Models, which considered the barriers that LGBTQ individuals can experience when coming out at work and the best approaches to overcome them. After Joanne Sykes, Divisional Director – Broker & ATE at Markel UK, opened the event, we were joined by panellists Erik Johnson – Markel, Eva Echo, and Marco Steel, MCMI, WTW, who discussed their own experiences and how organisations and allies can best support the LGBTQ community.   Thank you to the Dive In Festival and to all sponsors, volunteers and individuals who played a part in this amazing event. #DiversityAndInclusion #DiveIn2024 Dr Julie Humphreys FCIPD

Nick Line, our Chief Underwriting Officer, recently spoke to Insurance Times about improving accessibility to careers in underwriting and why leaders must drive change through authentic action, such as modelling the behaviours and priorities they want to see in their own teams.   "Diversity and inclusion is both an opportunity and a responsibility for all colleagues, no matter their demographic or position within an organisation,” commented Nick.     As the Diversity and Inclusion sponsor at Markel, Nick also discusses the benefits of the Dive In Festival and the opportunities for both organisations and individuals to celebrate, learn and continue to strive for a more diverse and inclusive industry.     Read the full article to find out more:   https://lnkd.in/e3W4iKdK
