The latest figures from our 2024 State of the Sector Report, show the marine renewable energy sector supports 429 full-time employees in Wales, across a wide range of different roles 👷🏻♀️👷🏽♂️ Pembrokeshire tops the chart with 260 people employed within the sector, and both Swansea and Anglesey each boast a significant level of employment too. Our data also shows that on average, companies working within the Welsh marine energy sector employ 70% men and 30% women - a slight change on the 79% male 21% female split recorded last year, but as an industry we clearly have a way to go. Floating Offshore Wind Project Manager @ Marine Energy Wales

Stoked to have finally seen a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine up close and personal despite the fog! And very grateful for the invite from Allan MacAskill and the rest of the friendly team at Flotation Energy. A big thanks also goes out to Matthew Barnott, AMEI for comprehensively answering questions from me and Tom Luddington on the #Kincardine project! Really insightful to discuss learnings from the project around supply chain, environmental monitoring, and O&M. I’m a true believer that regional test and demonstration projects are key to maximising socioeconomic benefits from FLOW projects and will help drive cost down through learning and innovation. What do you believe is the most significant role T&D projects have as the FLOW industry matures?

🌊🌬️ Exciting news from the Celtic Sea! Celtic Sea Power (CSP) have developed a new wind resource model for the Celtic Sea which could potentially accelerate offshore wind development by up to two years! The model utilises wind and metocean datasets recently acquired from three of the first floating LiDAR systems (FLS) ever deployed offshore within the Celtic Sea. This includes data sourced from CSP’s own operations and a data sharing arrangement with a commercial partner. The mean wind speeds for the two offshore CSP FLS locations indicated the planned 4.932GW of FLOW deployment in the Celtic Sea by 2035 could produce enough electricity to meet the annual electricity needs of over eight million UK homes. This development also highlights the value of collaboration between developers for reciprocal benefit – without compromising commercial interests. A data-sharing arrangement has been established to enable collaboration between commercial developers with an interest in a robust data bank on the Celtic Sea wind resource.

As always a fantastic industry update from our friends at Marine Energy Wales. Key takeaways: ◽ The tidal stream ringfence is driving both interest and investment into marine energy in Wales. ◽ The total cumulative spending and investment from marine renewable energy in Wales has reached over £290m. ◽ While last year's spend was less than 2022, we are seeing a transition from public to private sector investment into the sector. ◽ Wales' wave energy sector needs support to get to commercialisation. The report makes helpful recommendations on the need for R&D support, visibility on a route to market, and for government to collaborate with industry to realise Wales' marine energy potential.
