While some trace elements, such as iron and zinc, help keep us fit and healthy, others, such as heavy metals, can have devastating consequences. Yet potentially dangerous levels of these elements are found all around us, from lead in old paint and water pipes to the by-products of industrial processes 🏭 Identifying these sources and understanding their impact has become a mission for Aaron James Specht from Purdue University College of Health and Human Sciences. Aaron uses Malvern Panalytical Epsilon 4 XRF systems to detect and measure heavy metals in dried blood spot samples collected on filter paper. Here’s a few reasons why this technology is key: • Non-destructive: Blood samples are not destroyed during analysis, and can be retained for further testing. • Easy to collect blood samples: This method only requires a spot of blood, increasing speed and simplicity of collection, as well as patient compliance. It also eases transport and storage, compared to venous blood samples. We are pleased to announce that the University of Twente's XUV Optics Research Group and Malvern Panalytical have extended their strategic collaboration! The collaboration is shaped around a joint research program supporting the use of Malvern Panalytical’s roadmap solutions for hybrid elemental and structural characterization of thin films in application segments including semiconductors and other advanced materials. Nanostructures such as thin films are key components in many of the electronic devices that we use daily. These structures measure just fractions of a nanometer to several micrometers thick and need X-ray analysis for reliable characterization. Research and development of new X-ray instruments, methods, and X-ray data analysis is crucial for the continuous improvement of semiconductors and other advanced materials. Lead exposure is a worldwide health risk and developing countries are among the hardest hit. More than half of all US adults have been exposed to dangerous levels of lead in their lifetime, while background lead exposure in India is almost six times higher than that in the US. Malvern Panalytical’s Epsilon 4 XRF systems are used in this study to provide a simple, portable, and cost-effective solution for heavy metals detection. The devices use energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) to analyze dried blood spot samples while maintaining their integrity. The study has implications for expanded testing worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries lacking heavy metals surveillance 🔎 Learn more about the study here: https://bit.ly/3zeHvlM Purdue University College of Health and Human Sciences #EnvironmentalHealth #PublicHealth #Cleaner #Healthier #MoreProductive #MalvernPanalytical #PurdueUniversity
