With temperatures dropping, nights closing in and Halloween celebrations, it’s officially pumpkin spice season 🎃🍂 It might surprise you to know that the same spices that give us a cosy feeling when eaten – including cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger – can be used for a variety of medical applications. Just as grinding spices into smaller particle sizes increases their surface area and intensifies their flavour as a result, obtaining a stable emulsion of spice nanoparticles can prove especially useful in the pharmaceutical sphere. For example, nano cinnamon has been combined with orthodontic adhesives due to its antibacterial properties, helping to prevent dental caries, and ginger extract has been used in reducing inflammation in schistosomal liver fibrosis, with similar anti-inflammatory properties being observed in turmeric. Nutmeg oil-loaded nanoemulsion has even proven effective as an insect repellent! So the next time you’re sipping on a pumpkin spice latte, think twice about what those warm and comforting spices can do! ☕️ Visit our website to find out more about our expert particle analysis solutions for every industry: https://lnkd.in/ezXVWDUE #MaterialScience #ParticleAnalysis #PumpkinSpice #PartnersinDiscovery

What’s the difference between Kevlar and plastic? They’re both polymers, but only one can stop a bullet – do you know why? In our latest blog, we dive into the question of polymer crystallinity, which refers to the atomic and molecular structures within a polymer. ⚛️ Kevlar and plastic have different properties because their crystalline structures have very different proportions and types of amorphous, crystalline, and semi-crystalline regions. 💎 As a result, characterizing crystallinity is a crucial step in polymer R&D and quality control. Read the blog to learn more about crystallinity analysis, and the benefits of X-ray diffraction (XRD) for this purpose! ⚡️ Find it here 👉 https://bit.ly/4f0ahXh #XRD #Polymer #Innovation

Congratulations to Taco V., Segment Manager for Energy, Petrochemicals and Polymers, who has been honored with a prestigious ASTM award! Taco joined ASTM International in 2006, soon becoming Chair of its Declarable Substances in Materials Committee. From 2013, he served in various positions on the Board of Directors, including as Board Chair in 2019. During his tenure as Chair, Taco was a passionate advocate for ASTM’s role in industry and global trade across the world, and his collaborative work spanned multiple continents. Insights from organizations such as ASTM help us to predict the future of analytical instrumentation, as governments ask international bodies, such as BSI, ISO and CEN, to make the test methods and analysis protocols we need to control the quality and safety of the goods we use on a daily basis, as well as to protect our environment and our health. #Standardization #AnalyticalInstruments #Quality #Safety
Board member and former Board Chair Taco V. received ASTM's 2024 William T. Cavanuagh Award at a reception in Brussels today. Current Board Chair Bill Griese and ASTM President Andy Kireta gave remarks and presented the award — named for W.T. Cavanaugh, CEO of ASTM International from 1970 to 1985. Cavanaugh established ASTM International as the world leader in developing and disseminating voluntary standards. #ASTMproud #BoardinBrussels
