Maccreanor Lavington is an award-winning architectural practice established in the early nineties by Gerard Maccreanor and Richard Lavington. Working from offices in London and Rotterdam, Maccreanor Lavington has built up a diverse portfolio of both individual buildings and large-scale urban design projects and has a particular expertise in housing, public buildings and regeneration. Our architecture is calm but uplifting, contemporary yet timeless. Rather than shout for attention, out work is deliberately background in character, seeking to create ‘ordinary’ places for living and working. The design of our heating and cooling systems is historically based upon providing a universal thermal comfort however, achieving the “right” temperature for occupants is fraught with issues. Something that we’ve found here in our own office where there have been tensions between people feeling too hot or cold. Do thermal comfort standards need an industry review, providing better individual control and rely more on users to change behaviour based on conditions rather than prescribed set point temperatures? Should we be adapting to our environments using our own intervention rather than relying of technology? A firm favourite from the portfolio, our Dutch project, Metro station Kraaiennest, in Amsterdam’s Bijlmermeer district, has been selected as a finalist in the Infrastructure & Public Realm category for the Architecture Today Awards for buildings that stand the test of time. The objective was to create a functional, well-manageable, and socially safe metro station in the heart of the city. We created a contemporary entrance in the form of a beautifully laser cut steel box allowing playful natural light to filter play during the day, whilst glowing from within at night, acting as a marker. The technical spaces were collected in a closed box underneath the escalators, giving access to the platform. The second box had a cut-out decorative skin to prevent graffiti and to let light through. The sun is finally shining and softball season is upon us. Here's some of the ML gang who teamed up with Pollard Thomas Edwards and played a nail biting match against Jestico Whiles. After a quick refresh of the rules and some fuelling crisps we played a fantastic game, bringing home our first win of 28-26. Well done to everyone that played!
