Ensuring that the design, development, and use of technology respect human rights and social justice is a critical issue of our time. At Luminate, we’re continuing to evolve to meet this challenge. By 2026, all our work will focus on challenging the unchecked harms and outsized power of Big Tech, social media platforms, and AI companies – especially where they disproportionately affect marginalised people. From climate change to gender rights to racial equality, we want to ensure our future is one where technology works for, and not against, people and society. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dtxtP_W3

As Ireland's media regulator introduces unprecedented online safety measures through its online safety code, our partner Uplift, People Powered Change is ensuring that citizen voices are heard. Uplift's recent event “People’s Inquiry on Big Tech Harms” in Dublin brought together diverse voices sharing real experiences of digital harm – from students battling anxiety to asylum seekers facing online harassment. But what made this event unique was its focus on systemic solutions rather than individual responsibility. With platforms like Instagram and TikTok now facing substantial penalties for non-compliance, Uplift's upcoming report to the Irish government will push for meaningful change in how our digital spaces are structured and governed. Their message is clear: we need more than self-regulation to protect marginalised communities online.

On 31 October, join the Inter-American Dialogue's timely panel discussion featuring our partners and leading experts in digital democracy and freedom of expression, with closing remarks by Luminate's Felipe Estefan. RSVP to join in-person or online at https://lnkd.in/eSycJRsG. This event will be held in English and Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation via Zoom into English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Their work aims to foster collaboration and dialogue between academics, businesses, civil society organisations, and government officials.

Nigeria's bold vision for digital transformation under Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani is reshaping Africa's largest economy. With plans to achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027 and expand fiber infrastructure by 90,000 kilometres, Nigeria is positioning itself as a digital powerhouse. In a wide-ranging interview with GEG - Groupe d'Études Géopolitiques, Nigeria's Minister of Innovation also discusses Nigeria's unique approach to AI development — including the creation of Africa's first multi-language large language model and the establishment of the AI Collective (https://lnkd.in/epwe-YYN) — and emphasises the importance of including Global South perspectives in international AI governance discussions. 💡 "You cannot talk about governing AI when you do not have the right people around the table. You cannot outsource the leadership for how Nigeria or Kenya or South Sudan should think about artificial intelligence to a country in the North, because the way the countries in the North are thinking about AI is totally different and we understand why."
