About us

We’re a London borough on the rise. We have bold and ambitious plans to build a better Merton together, putting the needs of our residents at heart of everything we do. Merton encompasses the towns of Colliers Wood, Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon, and is home to a vibrant, growing population of more than 220,000. We are proud custodians of some of the best sporting heritage in the world. Merton’s connectivity is unbeatable in south London. We are at the start of both the Northern and District Tube lines, which offer direct access into central London in just 20 minutes. And, we’re a borough going places. We have a blueprint for the future to unlock the full potential of what we have to offer in our borough, in the capital and beyond. We’re focusing on three priorities: 1. Civic Pride We’re working to ensure Merton’s places, people and organisations thrive, because we want everyone to be proud to live and work in Merton and feel connected to their communities. 2. Building a sustainable borough for the future We’re building a future in Merton by creating a place bolstered by more affordable and sustainable homes; that’s celebrated for its vibrant high streets, excellent schools, and safe neighbourhoods; a borough where everyone feels connected to their community, embraces diversity, and a place where our residents can lead healthy, active lives. 3. Borough of Sport Merton is becoming London’s first Borough of Sport. That’s because we believe in the power of sport to connect, inspire and transform our borough. Our people are our greatest asset and we’re always searching for the very best talent to come and join us. And in return, we offer a full range of employment benefits to ensure every member of staff feels valued and able to progress. We will nurture your talent: give you the space to create and innovate; and work hard to support and develop you to fulfill your potential.

This week is the Environment Agency's #FloodActionWeek, a timely reminder that everyone must play their part in reducing flood risk and that in doing so, we have the opportunity to bring wider benefits to our local communities.    London boroughs are already doing lots of excellent work to mitigate the risk of flooding and benefit communities in the Capital. For example, London Borough of Merton recently completed a re-development of a pocket park in a residential area of Wimbledon which has been repeatedly flooded in recent years.    The project saw Kenilworth Green developed into a new shared community space with a large SuDS raingarden with below ground storage, wildflower meadow, pergola, stepping logs and even a pétanque court following engagement with local residents and ward Councillors on what they would most like to see in the space. The re-developed and improved pocket park will not only help to store 45m3 of rainfall and reduce the risk of residential properties nearby being flooded in the future, but it has also provided the community with a space that everyone can enjoy and benefit from.   This is just one of many projects happening across London to ensure we are as resilient as possible to our changing climate.   London Councils is working with partners, including London boroughs, to establish the London Surface Water Strategy. The Strategy will deliver the step-change our city needs to achieve resilience and sustainability, as well as protection for our most vulnerable. It will allow us to collaboratively plan and deliver solutions across the city to reduce the impact of surface water flooding and sustainably contribute outcomes and benefits for all who live, work and visit London.

New research shows Wimbledon’s growing success post-pandemic.💡 We recently partnered with Wimbledon Quarter and Love Wimbledon Business Improvement District on a research study into Wimbledon town centre’s economy. The findings highlight Wimbledon’s remarkable growth into a thriving high street destination, with increases in the town centre’s footfall, spending, and activity. It reveals how Wimbledon has bounced back faster than other UK high streets – making it a standout success story. Key insights from the research are: ➡People are spending more time and money in the town centre compared to 2019, creating new community and business opportunities.  ➡The footfall in Wimbledon high street has been rising steadily since 2020, with the 2023 and 2024 footfall hitting new records and regularly exceeding 2019 levels.  ➡Existing and new businesses are capitalising on increased local spend with research showing Mastercard transactions (after inflation) have risen rapidly since 2020 and now are 25% higher than before the pandemic. New shops and leisure experiences, such as Gail’s and Third Space, are evidence of this. Overall, the findings reflect the post-pandemic trend of growth in areas around the outskirts of cities, while central zones remain slow to recover. This demonstrates Wimbledon as an exemplar of London “villages”, with its high street recovering much faster than central areas as residents find a new work/life balance post-pandemic. We are proud of the continued success of Wimbledon town centre despite post-pandemic challenges. We are working hard to foster thriving town centres and local economies across Merton to ensure local communities and businesses can flourish.
