Nicky Bitar, who is a Service Manager within our Community and Day Provisions (Adult Safeguarding Social Care & Health), has been shortlisted for the prestigious Supported Employment Leader Award. For anyone who knows or works with Nicky, this is unlikely to come as a total surprise. She is best known for her tireless work on the DFN Project SEARCH supported internship programme where, over the past decade, we have supported over 100 young people – that’s 78% of our Project SEARCH graduates - into paid employment. Given only 4.8% of people in England with a learning disability or autism, go on to secure full-time paid employment, that’s something to celebrate, and we hope we can raise a glass to Nicky on the 19 November when winners are announced at a dinner in Manchester. Coupled with three of our social workers up for gongs at the Social Worker of the Year awards next week, November could be a successful month for Children's and Adults Services. The Supported Employment Leader Award is part of the BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT (BASE) Awards, which recognise excellence in helping individuals with disabilities and other disadvantages find and retain meaningful employment. BASE is a leading advocate for specialist employment support, championing high-quality, inclusive employment services across the UK and helping improve employment outcomes for disabled people. The BASE Awards shine a spotlight on the most inspiring practices and people in Britain, celebrating those who make a real difference in the lives of neurodivergent, people with learning disabilities and disadvantaged individuals. This week’s event for care leavers was a powerful gathering aimed at sharing resources, experiences, and support systems available to young people transitioning out of care. Organizations like Barnardo’s, Settle, Volunteering matters, and FocusGov are doing incredible work to ensure that care leavers have the tools they need to thrive in their independence. A highlight of the event was the discussion about the Care Leavers App, developed by FocusGov for Hounslow. This app serves as a central resource for care leavers, offering essential tools and information to help organise their calendars, finances, and more. Attendees were encouraged to provide feedback on what they thought of the app, with a £20 Amazon voucher raffle for all those that participated. Care leavers discussed new features including ‘Discount offers’, a tool that grants access to special deals on gym memberships, cinema tickets, utility bills and more. Upcoming features were also discussed such as a budget planner to help manage finances and a mental health toolkit to provide instant advice and resources. Feedback from care leavers will help shape future updates, ensuring that the app meets the community's needs. One of the most moving parts of the evening was hearing from a previous care leaver who shared their journey from care to university, supported by a scholarship. They remarked, "When you let trauma guide you, it takes you to places you don't want to go" emphasising the important influence that positive caring relationships can have on personal development. The event was a testament to the strength and resilience of care leavers, as well as the organizations committed to supporting them. With resources like the Care Leavers App, the Settle program, and mentorship opportunities, young people are better equipped to face the challenges of independence. Together, we can help ensure that every care leaver has the chance to thrive and create a bright future. #NCLW24
