Building on the success of lomarlabs' first Maritime Technology Demo Day at #Posidonia earlier this summer, our corporate venture lab is co-hosting the Hamburg Edition Maritime Technology Demo Day during the SMM Hamburg international maritime trade fair. We’re excited to again have a #Lomar team in the annual #OSCAR Dragon Boat Race 2024, taking place on Friday 13th September, at the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre in London. Twenty-five teams from the #shipping industry will be battling it out to find the six fastest boats and ultimately determine the industry’s ‘champion dragons’. Beyond the race itself, the event will again raise a huge amount of money for the OSCAR campaign for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (#GOSH). OSCAR is ‘The Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children’s Health and Research’ campaign, an innovative fundraising partnership uniting the international shipping community to raise funds for GOSH and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (ICH). Aside from being crowned champions in 2017, we’re even prouder to have been part of a charitable event that has raised over £2 million for OSCAR since its inception in 2011. In an interview with the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (#RINA), Alisha Fredriksson, CEO and co-founder of lomarlabs portfolio company Seabound, highlighted their innovative approach to onboard carbon capture (OCC). Seabound has developed a passive containerised OCC system using calcium oxide, which can reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 80%, as demonstrated in the recent pilot aboard our #Lomar #containership SOUNION TRADER. Unlike traditional amine-based systems, Seabound's technology stores CO2 as calcium carbonate, which can later be processed at ports. This method not only captures carbon but also sulphur with 90% efficiency. Backed by ship operators, private equity, and UK government funding, @Seabound plans to offer a full logistics service to shipowners coupled with the OCC equipment. The event included a conference with sessions on diverse voices in maritime media, #ESG practices, and #alternativefuel options for #decarbonisation, featuring key industry speakers. An evening reception celebrated WISTA UK's achievements, and future initiatives, and underscored WISTA UK's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and advancing women's roles in maritime. Today marks four years since the passing of our late CEO, Achim Boehme, a visionary leader who left an indelible mark on the #maritime industry. We would like to take this moment to say a huge thank you to all those who have supported and continue to support our Achim Boehme Scholarship Programme, which was set up in his honour. We established the Achim Boehme Scholarship in 2021, in collaboration with the HSB Hochschule Bremen – City University of Applied Sciences in Bremen, Germany. This scholarship programme is designed to support the next generation of maritime professionals, providing them with the education and resources they need to carry forward Achim’s mission of excellence in the industry. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who has donated to and supported this programme, which perpetuates Achim’s lifelong contribution to shipping by helping to develop the leaders of tomorrow. We look forward to supporting even more students in the future and hope others will join us on this journey. Achim was a great leader and innovator who inspired the development of so many in our profession,” said Nicholas Georgiou, Lomar CEO. One of our Achim Boehme Scholarship recipients, Kelly O’Grady, shared: "The support of the Achim Boehme Scholarship has helped me to make the most of the last years of my training. At home, the monetary support allowed me to focus on my studies. At sea, Lomar Shipping organised an incredible cadetship on-board a 34,347-dwt container ship for me. I spent 6 months in the Indian Ocean, learning the practical side of life and work at sea. The Marine Plastic Litter Global Industry Alliance (GIA), led by the #UN International Maritime Organization (IMO), is inviting businesses in the shipping and fisheries sectors to join together in developing solutions to help reduce #ocean plastics. Building on the IMO's extensive expertise in this area, the alliance will focus on tackling marine plastic litter. This initiative aims to bring together diverse maritime stakeholders to collaborate, share knowledge, create guidelines, and promote green solutions. #Lomar supports the campaign to reduce marine plastic pollution. Through our pledge with IMPA - The International Marine Purchasing Association, we are committed to reducing plastic waste aboard our vessels and enhancing environmental stewardship in the maritime industry. These programmes demonstrate our efforts to pursue the most sustainable operations while also ensuring that we preserve the health of the oceans in which our vessels operate.
