"I don't think I've had one session, be it a child or an adult, where within 10-15 minutes, people aren't saying how calm they feel or at peace or how relaxed they feel." – Caitriona Lyons In our latest episode  released today , David Jones and Dr Naomi Murphy  had the privilege of speaking with  Caitriona Lyons, founder of Kerry Equine Therapies and Counselling. With over 20 years of experience in the horse industry and mental health, Caitriona has pioneered an innovative approach to emotional healing through horse-assisted therapy. Here are three key takeaways from our discussion: Innovative Approach to Mental Health: Caitriona uses the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) model to provide impactful therapy sessions without requiring any prior horse experience. This method helps individuals — from children to adults — understand their emotions, recover from trauma, and find peace through interaction with horses. Horses as Emotional Healers: Horses have an incredible capacity for sensing and responding to human emotions. With 17 different facial expressions, they help synchronize heart rates and create a calming effect, making horse-assisted therapy a powerful tool for emotional support, especially for those grappling with trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, and grief. Making Therapy Accessible: Caitriona is passionate about making horse-assisted therapy available to all socioeconomic classes. She discusses how therapy options have expanded in Ireland, including more teams and upcoming training. Caitriona advocates for equine therapy to be a first-choice intervention, especially for children and individuals who have not found success with other forms of therapy. Tune in to hear more inspirational stories and insights from Caitriona Lyons about the transformative power of horses in therapy! 🔗  in comments

Seeking refuge in nature has a similar effect to seeking comfort in the arms of a loved one.  It’s easier to remain emotionally balanced, replenish our energy, recover from distressing events when we spend time with those we love.  Being in the company of someone we love also lowers our blood pressure, heart rate and stress hormones whilst promoting feelings of relaxation and well-being.  This interesting take on attachment theory proposes that we consider our relationship to nature similarly to how we think of our relationships to attachment figures.   More spiritual people might consider being dislocated from nature as a disconnect from God or Source.     When we engage with nature, we often experience awe.  Awe has been researched and found to help shift negative thoughts to positive ones like gratitude and optimism.  It also reduces feelings of anxiety and depression whilst increasing compassion and generosity.
