Last week at Marine Money Week 2024 in Singapore, James Forsdyke, Managing Director, LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, spoke at a panel session on "Shipping and the Road towards Decarbonisation", about the need to develop a compelling business case for the production of zero carbon fuels to open up access to capital to unlock supply-side development, currently deemed as the critical path for the scale-up of zero emissions shipping. Jack Spyros Pringle, LR’s Business Advisory Lead Consultant, also presented on "To 2030 and beyond - pathways to de-risk the energy transition", where he gave an overview of possible commercially viable pathways for transitions to alternative fuels in shipping, taking into account the latest regulatory incentives, such as US subsidy schemes to lower the price of blue ammonia. LR has launched its new Digital Maturity Framework and Index, a free web-based tool designed to help companies assess and benchmark their digital maturity. It was presented at the Smart Maritime Network SMAGIC event in Copenhagen this week, alongside 'The Benchmark' report, which outlines LR’s detailed digital maturity model for organisations to measure their digital transformation progress, from foundational levels to advanced data-driven decision-making. The tool is the first if its kind in the maritime industry and allows shipping companies to self-assess their digital readiness, compare themselves against competitors, and identify potential areas for investment in technology and skills. A joint report by Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) and LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub highlights the findings from a request for information (RFI) that the two organisations co-ran earlier in 2024, which demonstrate that commercial e-fuels deployment in the maritime sector would be feasible between 2027 and 2028, with limited deployment potentially as early as late-2026. These results suggest that ZEMBA can focus on aggregating demand for e-fuel-powered shipping services for its next tender. The key challenge identified by the RFI? A mismatch between supply of certain e-fuels and availability of e-fuel-capable vessels from 2027-2030. An excellent opportunity to see Peter Wallace, one of LR's most revered experts, speak on the potential for nuclear applications in offshore. Join him at the Houston Maritime Center & Museum on 8 October.
Made your reservation for the Houston Maritime Center & Museum Industry Lecture: Maritime & Offshore Nuclear Power, guest speaker Peter Wallace, Lloyd's Register. Nuclear applications in the civil marine and offshore environment have evolved over the last 12 months, and this presentation will delve into the large-scale interest that now exists in this area. Wallace will look forward on the challenges to come and see what to expect in the following 12 months across the domains of floating nuclear power, offshore nuclear, and ultimately the application of nuclear to shipping. Nuclear is emerging as a potential game-changer for the shipping and offshore industries. Nuclear-powered ships, while not a new concept, could offer a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fuels.
