New Publication The Lifebox Antibiotic Stewardship pilot has shown to reduce unnecessary postoperative antibiotic use and reduce hospital length of stay Published in a peer-reviewed journal, Surgical Infections, the results show: 📉 The percentage of patients receiving ≥24 hours of antibiotic prophylaxis after surgery decreased from 50.9% to 40.9%. The postoperative length of stay was reduced to half a day. This pilot is a significant step towards improved antibiotic stewardship in low- and middle-income countries, showcasing the power of tailored interventions and teamwork in improving patient outcomes. We recently completed our second round of Nursing Leadership for Surgical Excellence (NSLE) Training. The training took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and involved nine fellows across three facilities. The Lifebox NSLE program improves perioperative nursing care processes and practices, and patient outcomes in low- and middle-income countries through perioperative nursing fellowships. Our clinical team recently ran a SAFE OR course at our Clean Cut site, Hospital Provincial General de Référence de Bukavu, in Bukavu, DRC. 28 participants from four facilities took part in this 2-day course. Safe OR is a two-day, multi-disciplinary and highly interactive course co-developed by Lifebox with five partners. It aims to provide refresher training for surgeons, obstetricians, anesthesia providers, and OR nurses in the essentials of safe surgical care, emphasizing the importance of human factors and non-technical skills in surgery, and the general principles underlying the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
