How can (un)learning experiences help us imagine and transition towards radically better ways of being on this planet?

About us

Pedagogical experiments for sustainable futures: As global crises converge, how can (un)learning experiences help us imagine and transition towards radically better ways of being on this planet? ___ We design, deliver and facilitate (un)learning experiences – both our own and in collaboration with partners and clients. We hope our learning experiences will help you (and us) to imagine and transition towards radically better ways of being on this planet. We are experts in creating and improving online, in-person and blended learning experiences. We believe in taking time to really understand the purpose and context of the learning experience; we design based on what the evidence tells us about how people learn; and we advocate for prototyping and testing of ideas to build confidence and improve learning outcomes. ___ Deep down, most of us know we’re living in a colossal mess, yet we often find ourselves unsure of how to confront this reality. Instead, we tend to ignore it and carry on with our daily routines of production, consumption, and individualism. Life on this wonderful planet is overshadowed by capitalist systems that thrive on extraction and exploitation. It has become increasingly evident that these systems have never been, and never will be, sustainable – a truth long understood by marginalised communities across the globe. We believe our era of “more” must come to an end, as the true cost of endless growth and consumption is becoming increasingly difficult to deny. We believe it is time to embrace new stories and new possibilities, and to imagine and experiment with radically better ways of being on this planet. ___ Are you curious about the potential of (un)learning experiences to help us imagine and transition towards better ways of being on this planet? We’d love to talk.

We'd love it if you could help LearnJam become a not-for-profit organisation by filling in this (very short) survey on the role of learning in social and environmental change: https://lnkd.in/e-3kvStM

Hello! Do you work in social and/or environmental change? If so, could you spare a couple of minutes to respond to this (very short) survey and help us transition LearnJam to a not-for-profit community interest company (CIC)? Link in the comments. Why a CIC? First and foremost, continuing to operate as a private company no longer aligns with our values at LearnJam. We have been prioritising purpose over profit for a while now. To make this official, we are transitioning to a CIC. We also hope that this will allow us to support our community more effectively, giving access to alternative funding models. Why a survey? As part of the transition we need to connect with the community we want to serve (organisations working for social and environmental change), to better understand how we can help them. We are reaching out to gather insights from everyone we know. If this is you, we'd love it if you could fill in the survey. And if you know people who are working for a better future for people and planet, please tag them below or forward the survey to them. Many thanks! The new season of our co-learning sessions starts tomorrow (Thursday). Jo Sayers will host the first session looking at the #righttoroam movement. The sessions are free and focus on a different topic and resource each week. If you aren't already signed up, here's the link: https://lnkd.in/eBu4kHkE

Which of these do you find hardest to do? - Protecting time for essential learning - Imagining and believing in alternatives to extractive capitalism - Taking action for social and environmental change To help with all of the above, LearnJam hosts 'Co-learning at the end of an era', a weekly “come as you are” session of resources and conversations that are designed to deepen our understanding of the metacrisis and help us take action towards radically better ways of being on this planet. Season 4 starts tomorrow. 12pm - 1:15pm UK time (BST). Sessions are free to attend but you need to register here: https://lnkd.in/ewTqjZ6v

New case study on the LearnJam website of our work with Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) to create a course in Regenerative Economics for secondary schools. You'll never believe the principles we developed to guide us... 😉 https://lnkd.in/eppNwh2K

📈 In mainstream economics education all over the world, young people are taught that growth is the goal, with little or no questioning of the exploitative, extractive features of our current economic models. The current system is thereby propped up, making real change evermore difficult. 🌏 This is why I'm super proud of the work LearnJam did with Jennifer Brandsberg-Engelmann and Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) to create a prototype of a course in Regenerative Economics for secondary schools. A course that explores planetary boundaries, the commons, the unpaid labour carried out in homes everywhere, every day. A course centred around interconnectedness, bottom-up change, generosity, awareness and action. 🤗 The project was also a joy to work on! The strong purpose and values alignment within the team felt really energising and rewarding and helped things flow! 💸 We're really grateful that the work we did contributed to a successful proposal for funding, so the full course is now being developed. 📃 We've written a case study of the project for our website, with lovely quotes from the wonderful Jennifer Brandsberg-Engelmann and Carolina Escobar-Tello (she / her) ✍ If you also believe that young people should be exposed to regenerative economics, you can sign the open letter here: https://lnkd.in/etw8Tkuv

As we approach the longest night, and the end of the trip around the sun we call 2023. Here is an excerpt from Jo Sayers' blog post reflecting on how the year unfolded at LearnJam ... In May, we embarked on the climate-focused group learning experience The Week (theweek.ooo), and started on a new journey for LearnJam, with more commitment to using our learning design skills for good. We discovered a deeper understanding of the underlying systems causing the climate emergency, and a desire for this to be where we direct our energy. We realised we struggle to see radically better futures clearly: we need to feel our way towards them, with experimentation. To this end, we engaged in an action inquiry on Cyclical Organising with The Slow Work Garden, a Huddlecraft navigating Turning Points with Kate Weiler and a course on Co-creating the Emerging Future at Schumacher College. We learned so much. We worked with Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL) and Jennifer Brandsberg-Engelmann to imagine a Regenerative Economics curriculum for young people. We started a programme to imagine alternative midwinter rituals. We created You are Nature, a physical zine which we posted out to people. We hosted a weekly co-learning session. We got lost and frustrated along the way, unsure of how to pursue the direction we want to take. We took on too much work at times, and didn’t have enough at others. We got tired, ill, both. We took our shoes off, spent time outside. Tried to rest more. Now is a time to slow down and connect with darkness, a time to make a fire and give thanks to the light. To both reflect on the past and look ahead to the future as we ‘turn the year’. https://lnkd.in/e88wNz2A #2023year #reflections #solstice

Happy December, friends! Welcome to the darkest month of the year (in the northern hemisphere). For those based in the UK, how do you feel about the upcoming holidays?
