Well done to our Expanded team for completing their latest milestone on the work they are delivering at Old Oak Common for HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd as part of the Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA Joint Venture 👏
Congratulations to our team, working for the Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA Joint Venture, on completing the excavation of the station box at HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd ’s Old Oak Common super hub station in west London. We are delivering a substantial part of this project, including all the bulk excavation and reinforced concrete works, to enable the next stage of construction of this incredible piece of rail infrastructure. It’s a remarkable achievement and the result of meticulous planning and three years of hard work by a dedicated team of people – supported by a collaborative client and end user. The stats reveal the scale of the engineering feat - the vast underground box has a 1.12 mile fibre-reinforced concrete diaphragm wall around it, and 1.3million tonnes of London Clay has been removed from inside – enough to fill 300 Olympic sized swimming pools. It was removed from site using a conveyor system – which has prevented 75,000 lorry journeys – and the earth has been reused at sites across the country. With the bulk excavation complete the project can advance to the next stages - building the station and its high speed platforms. Six 450m platforms will be constructed in the underground box for HS2 services. Above ground, eight further platforms are being built, and will be served by the Elizabeth Line, Great Western Mainline services and the Heathrow Express. Old Oak Common station will become one of the country’s most vital transport hubs which will be directly connected on the UK’s railway network to more than 170 destinations – and we’re proud to be involved. NAIDOC Week may only be seven days long, but it serves as an important reminder of the changes we must all continue to strive for in the journey to Reconciliation. This year’s theme ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’ celebrates the unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced. Earlier this week Adam Goodes joined our team in Australia for an insightful discussion about the highs and lows of his career as a professional AFL player, his efforts to tackle racism and advice for allies, and the work he is doing with the GO Foundation - The Goodes O'Loughlin Foundation. Thank you Adam for sharing your inspiring story with us. Together, we can keep the fire burning. #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek #BlakLoudProud

Laing O’Rourke’s General Manager of Sustainability and Environment, Hollie Hynes GAICD, and Low Carbon Materials Lead, Dr Monica Hanus-Smith, recently sat down with the team at Engineers Australia's Create Digital to discuss the challenges and opportunities of low carbon concrete. Laing O'Rourke was the first construction company in Australia to create a maximum tolerance of embodied emissions for the concrete we use and publish a clear, transparent definition of Low Carbon Concrete. In this article, they explain these and other mechanisms we are using to drive towards the next generation of low carbon concretes, and net zero: https://loom.ly/ZW5xBbE To learn more about our Concrete Carbon Limits, check our dedicated page for our Australian Supply Chain partners: https://loom.ly/TB7GxeA
