What are the fire safety considerations for a historic site? Is there a careful path to tread for making a site compliant? 'Heritage buildings were constructed well before there were any fire safety regulations to adhere to. 'As such, many historical sites were built using materials that have not been used in over a century which can make them particularly vulnerable to fire damage, resulting not only in the potential loss of the structure itself but the valuable contents housed inside.' New research reveals UK fire services attended 46% more fires linked to Lithium-ion batteries in 2023 compared to the previous year. Data collected by the business insurer, QBE, suggests the batteries that power electric vehicles such as bikes, scooters and cars, were involved in almost three fires a day last year, compared to under two fires a day in 2022. #firesafety https://lnkd.in/gwWfp4Yn

City of Glasgow College - City Campus . Just a little farther East along Cathedral Street from the Charles Oakley Building and Met Tower featured in my previous post is the City of Glasgow College City Campus. . The merger of Glasgow’s Central, Metropolitan and Nautical colleges created a super college, bringing together facilities previously housed in 11 separate buildings across the city, within two new central campuses. The huge 60,000m2 City Campus building, pictured below, opened in September 2016 and accommodates 40,000 students and 1,200 staff, across six major faculties. . The cranked plan of the West facade is a response to the intersection of the Merchant City's grid plan and the diagonal route from the medieval old town. A wedge shaped cascade of steps negotiates the 10m change in site level from Cathedral Street to the upper entrance where the north-western wing of the building joins the main block. Larger stepped platforms that double up as external seating are well used by students (even on a cold January day). . The upper entrance can also be reached directly by paths crossing the new green space created to the West of the building, avoiding the steps, and there is disabled parking adjacent to this entrance. . I didn't have the opportunity to explore the interior this time, but hope in future to see the dynamic diagonal shaped seven-storey atrium that connects the upper and lower entrance lobbies with its generous staircase negotiating the same 10m level change in level as outside. . City of Glasgow College City Campus won the RIBA Award for Scotland 2017 and RIBA National Award 2017. .
