We are the leading kidney research charity in the UK.
About us
Kidney Research UK is the largest UK charity dedicated to research into the prevention, treatment and management of kidney disease. Kidney Research UK also dedicates its work to improving patient care and raising awareness of kidney disease. Over three million lives in the UK are threatened by chronic kidney disease and it can strike anyone at any age, male or female. This is why Kidney Research UK is dedicated to improving the understanding of kidney disease, its causes and treatments. The only treatments available to patients are a transplant, in which there is a huge shortage of available organ donors, or a life on dialysis, a life sustaining treatment - but which can severely restrict daily life. The charity is making important scientific breakthroughs all the time and medical researchers are constantly developing improvements in treatments. However, we can only currently fund one in five research projects presented to us and scientific advances can only be sustained, and improved, if we succeed in raising our income and for that we need your help.

A new book designed to support children with chronic kidney disease has been launched at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The Get Better Books were created by a multidisciplinary team from the hospital, including renal nurses and play workers, to help children prepare for their kidney treatment journey. With additional funding from Quadrant Events and Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, these playful, interactive books use a fun approach to show what to expect at different stages of kidney treatment, helping to reduce anxiety. Birmingham Children’s Hospital will provide each child with a copy, along with felt tips and a ‘My Kidney Journey’ drawstring bag. The book can be used by children and their families to discuss the treatments they may need at various stages of their journey. 🎉 New grant success! Dr Helen Weavers from the University of Bristol has received a PhD studentship grant of £100,000 to develop kidney research methods. We know health and social impacts such as diabetes, smoking, and age could be contributing factors to kidney disease, but less is known about the biological processes involved. It is important to understand this better so more research can be done in how to target these issues. Read more about Helen’s work here: https://bit.ly/4d5bTh4

We are honoured to share Farzana’s #kidney and #pancreas #transplant story to mark the start of #SouthAsianHeritageMonth. Farzana’s life took a drastic turn on her 12th birthday when she was diagnosed with diabetes. For the next 23 years, she lived with the daily struggles that followed. A shoulder injury led to medication that caused a dangerous drop in her blood sugar levels, resulting in hospitalisation. During this time, she was also diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease, with her kidney function plummeting to just 30%. In May 2021, Farzana’s world changed forever when she received a call that a donor was available from a young gentleman who had tragically passed away in his 40s. After seven hours in the operating theatre, and three days in the intensive care unit, Farzana realised she had been given a new lease of life and a second chance to live fully. Reflecting on her emotional journey, Farzana shares: “Today, as I write this whilst ugly crying, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for the gift I've been given. My thanks extend to every organ donor and their families. Their selflessness has changed my life, and other patients’ lives, forever. In their memory, I'm committed to spreading awareness about organ donation, ensuring that hope continues to shine for others in need.” Read her full, inspiring story here: https://bit.ly/3zKKF0S

It is time to act. We are urgently calling for action to address the social and economic inequalities that put certain individuals at a higher risk of kidney disease. These inequalities can prevent patients from receiving the appropriate care and treatment they desperately need. In our new report, Time To Act: A New Review of Kidney Health Inequalities, we highlight some alarming facts and statistics. Inequalities relating to age, sex, education, location, and lack of wealth persist and continue to impact and hinder kidney patients. We will be sharing some of these with you over the next few weeks. It is essential that we recognise and take urgent action to eliminate these obstacles. Everyone deserves a fair chance at good kidney health. You can read the full or summarised report here: https://bit.ly/3xWLseB Are you impacted by kidney health inequalities? We would love to hear your voice in the comments. 👇
