Chief Executive at Kent Wildlife Trust; and Managing Director at Wilder Carbon

#2MinuteReadBelow: a short blog from one the Kent Wildlife Trust team about the tireless work they do to try and prevent damage to, and loss of, our nationally significant ancient woodlands. This has to be core funded by the Trust in a world of ever-increasing pressure on habitats, and ever-increasing competition for 'traditional' (grant) funding (which rarely enables this type of ongoing effort). It is time consuming, complex, relentless stuff. And it is only possible thanks to our members, and our supporters. So, if you value #KentWoodlands then have a read, and consider joining KWT and/or donating to our #SaveOurWoodlandsCampaign. https://lnkd.in/e3MeRF_k

🚨 Oaken Wood in Aylesford is facing its greatest threat in decades. Kent County Council’s draft Mineral Sites Plan proposes expanding Hermitage Quarry into this ancient woodland, which could result in the loss of over 50 hectares of irreplaceable habitat and biodiversity. This would be the largest single development threat to ancient woodland in England, even surpassing losses from HS2 and the Lower Thames Crossing. We are working alongside local campaign groups and conservation organizations to stop this destruction. Together, we’ve raised concerns through official consultations, and we need public support to continue fighting for this precious woodland. 🙌 If you support the Save Our Woodlands appeal today, we can continue actively engaging with local campaign groups to protect Oaken Wood and other ancient woodlands at risk across the county. It’s been over year since we awarded the Wilder Blean Initiative £100k through the Rewilding Challenge Fund 🎉 We caught up with Helen Pitman, Wilder Blean Landscape Manager at Kent Wildlife Trust, who lays out their grand vision for Wilder Blean. If you’re involved in a large-scale rewilding project with bold ambitions to let nature lead, help people prosper and secure long-term benefits, there’s still time to register your interest for this year’s Challenge Fund. The sky's the limit as 19 Chough soar over the White Cliffs of Dover! Wow, what a year it's been for our Chough Reintroduction project alongside our partners Wildwood Trust and Paradise Park. We are delighted to announce the release of our second cohort of birds bringing the new total up to 19. Following decades of chalk restoration work we were able to release the first cohort of Chough last year and were over the moon to see one of our pairs breed and fledge a wild chick for the very first time in Kent. Now that further birds have been released we can't wait to see what these cheeky charismatic birds get up to. Stay tuned as we introduce the latest group to Kent... Can you help keep our Chough flying high? Donate today and receive all the latest news straight to your inbox. https://lnkd.in/eQvSgpKK

Bison Bridges are coming! 🥳🦬 We’re delighted to announce that construction has begun, and we expect our first two bridges to be completed by the end of the year as we take the first steps into the next phase of the Wilder Blean Initiative. 🦬 Once completed the four bridges will help connect the landscape, increasing the area accessible to our bison from 50 to 200 hectares. That’s a whole lot of space for our ecosystem engineers to work their biodiversity boosting magic! The bison and wildlife will be able to walk underneath whilst people can walk on top to get fantastic views of the woodlands. 💚 If you'd like to join the herd and support our wonderful bison and their continuing journey then please get in touch to find out how you could be our next bison benefactor 👉 https://lnkd.in/d2mMFisR 🙏🙏This remarkable engineering project would not have been possible without the generous support of funders, we would like to extend our thanks to: The National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Highways Environment and Wellbeing Designated Fund as part of the Network for Nature programme, The Michael Uren Foundation, Veolia Environmental Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation and several Private donors. #bison #WilderBlean #bleanbison #kentbison

***BREAKING NEWS*** AXREM Publishes Sustainability Manifesto with Safari at Kent Wildlife Trust We acknowledge the pressing imperative to tackle climate change, particularly its profound impact on public health, including heightened rates of cardiovascular disease, asthma, and cancer among the population, which directly concerns the NHS. AXREM members, are steadfast in their commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and actively support the NHS Net Zero roadmap. Recognising that the NHS England can influence supplier emissions through greener procurement practices, AXREM understands the pivotal role industry must play in achieving these goals. Therefore, collaboration between the NHS and its suppliers is indispensable for success. The core value within our manifesto include: Shaping the future for generation to come, Equity & inclusion, Community engagement, Ethical practices and empowerment. To mark the publication of the manifesto AXREM has been working with Wilder Carbon and members will be meeting later today at the Wilder Blean Initiative managed by Kent Wildlife Trust. In the UK, lack of woodland management is one of the eight biggest drivers of species decline. Similar projects across Europe have proved that bison, known as ‘ecosystem engineers’, can restore the natural biodiversity of a landscape. Natural bison behaviours – grazing, dust bathing, eating bark and felling trees – enable other species to thrive. The presence of bison at the Blean, alongside Exmoor ponies and Iron-Age pigs, will transform the woods into a lush, thriving, biodiverse environment once more. Helen Gillespie-Brown, Wilder Carbon Business Development Manager said “We are delighted to be hosting AXREM at the Wilder Blean initiative to help support the launch of their new Sustainability manifesto as well as sharing more about how Wilder Carbon are attempting to address climate change and biodiversity loss through nature restoration. Nature is, after all, the infrastructure on which we all ultimately rely. We need to protect and restore carbon rich native habitats across the UK for climate, for wildlife, and for society.” Chris Taylor, AXREM Sustainability & Social Value Special Focus Group Convenor and Sustainability Lead UKI at Philips said “At AXREM we recognise that collaboration is key function in achieving a more sustainable healthcare Industry. So, we are proud to align the launch of our sustainability manifesto, with impactful environmental initiatives like the Wilder Blean project, run by Kent Wildlife Trust, which work to transform woodlands into a lush, thriving, biodiverse environment once more".
