Kavaken Platform & Modules
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Software
The Kavaken platform consists of multiple modules working in unison to address different needs of renewable asset owners and operators with a common goal of maximizing the value they generate from their assets. Kavaken; Prevents equipment failures and shutdowns by using unsupervised learning algorithms on SCADA and vibration data. Maximizes production by learning and updating the baseline performance of an asset and alerting when there is a drop in performance with possible causes so that remedial actions can be taken to boost the performance. Improves sales and trading margins by increasing the accuracy of production forecasts via combining in-house weather prediction models with the forecasts from other providers and using ensembling algorithms to produce the highest accuracy forecast. Kavaken also offers dashboards and maintenance planning and monitoring capabilities so that key metrics and activities are centralized to achieve one version of the truth.

GE’s Haliade X turbines are back in the spotlight due to another blade failure—the third in less than four months and the second at the Dogger Bank A offshore project in the UK (link to the news in the comments). These failures likely stem from manufacturing errors. While the chances of one of your turbines being affected might seem low, those odds compound into significant risks when you manage hundreds or thousands of turbines. A subtle flaw can lead to catastrophic failure, even after years of operation. So, how can you detect such risks? For large fleets, automated and continuous inspections are the only way to stay ahead of this threat. In March and April, wind turbines in the United States produced more electricity than coal-fired power plants, surpassing this historically dominant but polluting energy source for two consecutive months for the first time, according to the Energy Information Administration (see the link to the NYT article by Minho Kim in the comments). The renewables industry operates with unique dynamics, setting itself apart from other ‘production’ sectors. It’s rare to see production facilities in many industries change hands frequently enough to justify regular, even weekly, deal flow updates. Yet, in the renewables industry, assets are bought and sold at an impressive pace. Just look at the deals that have occurred since the beginning of August—remarkable! It seems the renewables industry is embracing consolidation more rapidly than some larger sectors. Companies are increasingly looking to internalize key capabilities through acquisitions, as seen in the latest move: ‘Blackstone acquires a majority stake in renewables engineering firm Westwood Professional Services’ (see the link to the news in the comments). While consolidation can bring efficiencies, it’s worth questioning whether this trend might have unintended consequences. For some players—due to scale, economics, or the desire to remain lean—acquiring or internalizing certain capabilities simply isn’t feasible. As a result, when major firms absorb service providers, it could reduce competition and limit options for others in the industry. Unlike sectors like automotive, where the ratio of service providers to service users is higher, our industry may find itself in a more fragile position if key service providers are removed from the open market. Is this consolidation a necessary evolution, or could it stifle innovation and competitiveness in the long run? Only time will tell. (Photo by Blackstone) #renewables #acquisition #competition

Wind turbine protection market on the rise: Thin margins in renewable energy push investors to find ways to prevent performance drops and reduce costs. This has fueled growth in the wind turbine protection market (e.g., various coatings against rain erosion or icing), which is expected to reach $2.8 billion by 2029 (see link in the comments). However, these materials’ effectiveness varies by site. Based on our experience with Kavaken clients, investors should use operational data from pilot turbines at their sites for feasibility assessments rather than rely solely on providers’ claims and it is good practice to test out promised outcomes on a smaller batch before fleet wide implementations.
