For a long time, in search of professional and personal improvement, I tried to learn English in different ways. This year that goal became my priority, and I was fortunate to discover that a company that I have followed for many years, Kaplan International Languages, also had the possibility of having classes in real time online and intensively, with expert teachers and an environment truly extraordinary learning. In addition to having advanced these months in my level of English, I have met people from all over the world (from places as remote for me as Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Egypt, South Korea, Japan, China, Norway, just to name a few). Dynamic classes that make me feel like I'm in a classroom in Manchester or London, as well as daily conversation clubs that take me to New York or Boston. Whether you need to improve your IELTS score, are looking for new professional opportunities, or simply want to communicate better when traveling the world, Kaplan's Online English School is an excellent alternative. #englishonlinelearning #englishonline #englishclass #englishcourse24 #kaplanexperience #kaplan https://lnkd.in/eevGT4Pn Joseph Bleazard

  • Last week, we published a TikTok video that attracted thousands of 'likes' and has been seen by almost 2m people. The topic? Slang and how it differs across the generations! Slang is something that fascinates English language students - perhaps because it is viewed as the essence of 'real' English. But is it professional? What do you think? Is there a place for 'slang' in the workplace or is that idea just delulu? (You'll need to watch the video to find out what that word means!) #KaplanLovesEnglish #KaplanCareerSuccess

  • Do you find certain aspects of English confusing? You're not alone! Today, we're delighted to share a guest post from Ed Potter, our Regional Academic Manager for theUK and Ireland, who reflects on the various ways that English can confuse us. "I recently took a trip to the US. On top of the usual challenges that come with overseas travel these days, navigating the linguistic landscape might have been the biggest challenge of all... The first hurdle cropped up in NYC when my hotel tap started dripping and I called down to the concierge for help. He was utterly baffled, before suddenly exclaiming, 'Oh you mean the faucet! Sure, I'll send someone up to fix that right away!' Next there was the road confusion. In the UK, we drive on the road and walk on the pavement. Simple, right? Not in the US! Over there, you drive on the pavement and walk on the sidewalk. In San Francisco, I hired a bike and asked if it was okay to ride on the pavement. The answer? 'You can ONLY ride on the pavement.' My head spun faster than my bike wheels as I tried to figure out whether I was about to become a very serious road hazard! And let's not forget the divided opinion on the word "toilet." In the UK, you could reasonably ask the King for directions to the toilet without being considered vulgar. In the US, however, the word "toilet" is not for polite communicators. Instead, you have a wealth of euphemisms to pick from restroom, washroom, lavatory and of course bathroom, even though there most likely isn't a bath in sight. This linguistic minefield got me thinking about the many euphemisms we use to avoid being too blunt. Here are a few that spring to mind: 1. "Between jobs" instead of "unemployed" 2. "Seasoned" or "mature", instead of "old" 3. "Passed away" instead of "died" 4. "Stepped down" instead of "resigned" 5. "Pre-owned" instead of "used" or "second hand" Are there any euphemisms that you find funny, strange or confusing? Share in the comments below! Of course, context is key! Using the right euphemism can help in certain awkward situations. But be careful - overuse might leave your listeners wondering what you actually mean. Whatever aspect of English you find puzzling, our dedicated teams in the UK, Ireland, US and Canada will be delighted to help you find your way. Teamwork makes the dream work! Last week, our Toronto soccer team fought their way to victory in the ISX Soccer Tournament against other Toronto English language schools. With players from France, Switzerland, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Turkey, Brazil and Chile, it was more 'world cup' than a 'Euro' competition. Many of our students have fascinating jobs and careers. We do wonder if having a Fenerbahçe coach in the Toronto soccer team gave us a little bit of an advantage...See if you can guess which one of the players it is! #KaplanWinners #KaplanExperience #KaplanLovesFootball

This week, Jillian Nelson, our Seattle School Director talks about Seattle's attractions, the key to successful language learning and the person who had the greatest influence on her! 📃Tell us about your career path📃 I've always been interested in living abroad. I did an exchange program to Japan in high school, which led to teaching in Japan for several years. I did a Masters in the UK and joke with my students that I chose England for my study abroad as I’m not as good at foreign languages as they are! My plan was to teach at a US university after my MA, but then I took a part-time instructor job at Kaplan after my return, not really expecting it to be a long-term thing. After teaching about 3 months, I moved to an accommodation role and started my Kaplan career path! 🌐What are the secrets to successful language learning? 🌐 The first thing I ‘d say is to take down your walls. You can only make real progress when you open yourself up to learning. What’s great about your team? As a school, we put the focus on communication and connection. I make a point of telling students how many mistakes I make in English! Accuracy is important but you can’t achieve accuracy if you’re not comfortable practising. ♥️What do you find most satisfying about the job?♥️ When a long-term student arrives with a low level and finishes their course with a full graduation speech before transferring to college in the United States. It’s incredible to witness and we get to be a part of that. 🏙️What makes Seattle a choice for students?🏙️ Seattle is a small ‘big city’. Sure, there’s corporate culture with Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft based here but there’s also a thriving arts scene with lots of musicians and artists. We also have nature on our doorstep. Lake Washington, Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains and of course, the iconic Mt. Rainier. The ability to enjoy city life and nature in the same day is a highlight. I’m a passionate snowboarder so that suits me particularly well. 👨👩👧How would you describe your team at Kaplan Seattle?👨👩👧 It’s a kind team with a jovial atmosphere. Everyone likes being here and understands that’s it’s all about the student experience. 💡Who’s your role model? 💡 I’d have to say my mom! As a single mom, with three kids, she started her own business and made a real success of it. She's one of the kindest people I know. The main thing I learnt from her is the willingness to listen to people. She works in insurance, advising older clients, helping them to figure out issues, and I learned a lot watching her deal with people. As school director, the ability to listen is critical. Students will come to you frustrated. They want to be heard and acknowledged and that basic understanding of people started by seeing my mom working with her clients.
