I have to say, working away with the TV on in the background showing the D-Day celebrations, is both humbling and calming in a way. I was partly raised by a grandfather who had been in WW2 tank command and was eternally fascinated by the stories he told, this fuelled a fascination with the campaign (and WW1) that has had me studying the field for 40 years. He became a pacifist following the war. I guess it is calming from that aspect, from a retrospective lens but I also take the view that the sacrifice made in a million ways, by 'everyone involved' and the changes to their daily lives is a great leveller for most of us today. I guess what may seem to be major issues to us on a Monday morning are paled squarely into utter significance when you consider life during those years. As we enter enter year 80, and very, very few of those brave souls are here to witness the days events and soon there will be none at all. I'll be raising a glass of very decent whisky with an RAF friend this evening to mark the occasion. Good to see the King looking sharp too. https://lnkd.in/eGttXvMQ
