About us
JOYRIDERS help women discover the joy and freedom of riding a bike… JoyRiders don’t cycle for sport, we ride for fun! MISSION: Our goal is to change Britain’s cycling equation. From 70% of regular riders being men, to at least 50:50 women and men VISION: We live in a world where everyone feels able to choose cycling as their main way of getting around JoyRiders empowers women who don't currently ride but would like to start or return to riding. We offer friendly and inclusive social rides to support women who are nervous about riding on the roads. Come join us for a ride in London, Cambridge, Manchester or Oxford. Meet our friendly ride leaders and other women like you! Many perceived barriers prevent women from getting on a bike: > 50% think the roads are too dangerous, or they lack the confidence > 30% do not own a bike, or anywhere to store one > at least one in ten are worried they will be laughed at – for being the ‘wrong’ shape, wearing the ‘wrong’ things > a third don’t know anyone to ride with, or don’t know how to find routes. Many of our participants and ride leaders were (and are) just like them. But once they get riding, they never look back! Are you a woman who loves riding? Do you want to support and inspire other women to go outside their comfort zone? **We can train you to be a Ride Leader if you want to join us as a volunteer.** Find out more and develop REAL leadership skills here: https://www.joyriders.org.uk/volunteerwithus

Our CEO was on BBC Radio London today talking about why cycling in London is important!
Did you know that 42% of London Households don't own a car? This means a large proportion of Londoners walk, wheel or use public transport to get around our city and considering that we have a climate emergency we should prioritize these forms of transport and make them more accessible by creating infrastructure that works for people and not for cars! Today I was invited to BBC Radio London to talk about this with the upcoming Mayoral and London Assembly elections in Mind. You can listen in here about 1.5hrs in https://lnkd.in/e_4HPtvN

An article I wrote recently for the LCC Magazine!
Comments welcomed https://lnkd.in/edFmJtux This article highlights the campaigning by IWGB - Cycling branch to secure improved terms and conditions for cycle instructors. https://lnkd.in/epzuJJKi Who we are We’re the Cycling Instructors’ Branch of IWGB. (For the uninitiated, cycling instructors teach bike control skills and safe road riding to adults and children. We also teach cyclist awareness courses to professional drivers, run all-ability cycling sessions and teach beginners to ride.) Our branch started in London, where the cycle training industry has been established longest, and where we now represent a significant percentage of the instructor workforce. As the government’s Bikeability programme goes national, we’re recruiting more and more members across England. Why we’re here Cycling instructors work on casual contracts, are poorly paid and are vulnerable to management “initiatives” to push costs and risks onto workers. There’s been no pay rise for decades. Instructors were hammered by the Covid pandemic and the industry is struggling to retain experienced instructors, let alone recruit new ones. We’re passionate about the job, but many of us can’t afford to stay in it. In November 2019 we decided that enough was enough, and formed a branch with IWGB. ..............

This is Funke who just learned to ride a bike today! It’s never too late but this is about so much more then learning to ride a bike. It’s about gaining confidence, meeting new people and creating new friendships. I’ve got a voice message from one of our instructors today how women encourage eachother during our sessions, how the more experienced ones give tips to newcomers and how they make their way home together if they live in the same area. This is what Joyriders Britain is all about and I feel blessed everyday to be part of this fantastic family!

In 2019, as one of Cycling UK's 100 women in cycling, being part of JoyRiders has brought immeasurable joy. The feeling of watching JoyRiders grow and flourish over time is truly heartwarming. As the group expands, the sense of community only deepens, making every ride even more special. Looking into the future, the prospects are exciting and promising. The growth of JoyRiders opens up endless possibilities for even more women to discover the joy of cycling and the empowerment it brings. The vision of a future where JoyRiders continues to thrive, inspiring more women to embrace cycling, is truly inspiring. https://lnkd.in/ey-4bkPA
