"Imposter syndrome disproportionately affects people from ‘Zero Gravity backgrounds’. I remember when I first joined, I was like, ’Is everyone else understanding this? Am I the only one that’s not quite grasping this?’“ We sat down with the fantastic Thomas Miles, one of our HSBC Career Mentors, to speak to us about the value of mentoring. As well as the social good of passing your wisdom back to the next gen, Tom mentors in part for his younger self - as he says, “there is an element of, ’I wish I had that!’“. Having been in the exact shoes as many of our members, he talks us through imposter syndrome, sitting in meetings and freaking out that you don’t know what’s going on, why HSBC has been the perfect place for someone like him, and how he’s hustling as many opportunities for his mentee as he can. "A-level students are celebrating an increase in top grades this year – with almost one in 10 awarded an A* – but inequalities have widened between private and state schools" This article from The Independent came out on A Level Results Day and it contained within it a bitter pill to swallow - that despite all of the celebration of day, the playing field is not yet level. And don't think for a minute that is because state-educated students are less talented. Chris Zarraga, director of Schools North East, pinpointed the issue by pointing out that "the most disadvantaged children have been hit the hardest by the cost of living crisis and the Covid pandemic." If you read the article, you might spot our very own Joe Seddon, CEO of Zero Gravity, calling for a "serious overhaul" in the uni admission systems, rightly showing up the injustice of the situation: “When it comes to university admissions, students from underperforming state schools have their grades compared to those from elite schools without any context about the challenges they’ve faced. How can universities judge potential if they have no sense if students achieved the same outcome from different starting points?” Well said, our Joe. "Zero Gravity has enabled our students to realise their dreams and ambitions.” A quote from one of the most important videos we’ve ever received. Jackie Johnson, one of the legendary teachers at our partner school Barnwell School sent us a video update about Results Day. Barnwell is a school we've partnered with for three years and so the whole team was really anxious to hear how their A Level Results Day had gone. Opening the video and hearing that the average A Level performance at Barnwell had risen by a whole grade since working with Zero Gravity was extraordinarily humbling. To know that we’ve been able to unlock doors for some of the most talented students in the country? It’s an unbeatable feeling. Jackie sums it up more beautifully than we ever could - “For us and our students, opportunity is now here.” Jackie, Barnwell School and all of our incredible members, the pleasure has been entirely ours.
