UK Economy grew by 0.4% in May... Resisting the urge to do a "How Gareth's management style can link to recruitment" post I'm going with a different angle but no less positive! - In May the UK economy grew faster than expected - Construction grew at the fastest rates in a year with building and infrastructure projects boosting the economy - Retail grew despite the gloomy weather - The services sector saw 0.9% growth The recruitment sector is still tough - less jobs than there have been but we are seeing movement in the jobs that are live and a number of clients are talking in positive terms. Objective: Create an intimate quarterly networking event for Technology Leaders in the South Purpose: Build a community where Leaders can develop, challenge and support each other Well last night was the first South Coast Technology Leaders Event at it was a resounding success We were held captivated by an excellent guest speaker in Andrew Gomarsall MBE who spoke passionately about how after his life as an Elite Sportsperson he found a new purpose at n2s and is focussing on pushing the technology sector to become part of the Circular economy   He also delivered a fascinating insight into how Bioscope Technologies have developed a groundbreaking green and sustainable approach to extracting precious metals from electronic waste It was a very thought-provoking topic that no technology leaders or organisations can continue to ignore Obviously, it wasn’t all serious and everyone in the room was equally amused and inspired by the stories that you expect any Rugby world cup winning hero to regale! So, what’s happening with the UK Jobs Market then… The May data is out and as before, it doesn’t make the best reading but I’d love to know your thoughts on whether you think the market is picking up or getting worse? We’ve seen a real spike in incoming work but the benefit of this report is that it pulls / collates from a huge number of agencies and data sources so should be a better barometer of what is really happening. Neil Carberry, Head of the REC, said “The UK Jobs market looks like it’s on its way back with clear improvements over the last month. Whilst permanent hiring remains weak, these are the best numbers we’ve seen in a year” Jon Holt, Chief Exec and Senior Partner of KPMG’s view is “that with today’s data, expected interest rate cuts, inflation easing and increased consumer confidence over the summer, we will hopefully move towards a better outlook for the second half of 2024”   📆May sees a weaker decline in placements 💰Further uplift in pay rates – closing the gap created by high levels of inflation but it will be a while before we’re feeling “richer” than before 🏆An increase in job seekers is making it challenging to end up with the offer but there are still high volumes of jobs being filled 📈The private sector has outperformed the public sector in terms of both permanent and contract vacancy volume and hiring 📉There’s a reduction in the overall number of live vacancies down to 898,000 live roles in the UK
